TTI X pipe install - having issues

TTI X pipe install - having issues - 09/06/13 01:29 AM

Just test fitting the new x pipe on the Dart. Car has a 383 with TTI headers, x pipe is 3". If I slip the pass side on the driver's side is a good 4-5 inches wide left (to the outside of the car) of the header collector. However, the x is nice and centered with the drive shaft right down the middle.

How much should I expect to modify this?? Given the marketing I thought the slip elbows allowed for enough adjustment to not have to re-engineer the system.

I see the 'L' and 'R' markings. I assume standing in front of the car 'R' is driver's side.

Thanks.

Left and right are seen as from sitting in the drivers seat.

Thanks (and embarrassing) now that I think about it. I'll flip things around and see if I have better luck.

Well, right or left, same issue, not even close to lining up with the collectors.

That X is probally a generic fit part.. I imagine you will need to do some and ...

I think you paid enough for the TTI exhaust that it should fit. Have you contacted TTI Tech Service? They should be best able to sort this out. You may have the wrong pieces?

I just installed a 3" x-pipe system on my 73 cuda. 383 with tti headers and dynomax mufflers. Had some similar issues. I just hosed all the slip joints down with white lithium grease and it helped ALOT! Let all those joints move in and out and twist around. At first I was ready to give up and take it to a muffler shop and have them modify it. All the pieces have the part numbers on them so I would double check them with the install sheet.

I'll look at it again this weekend. The joints are covered with never-seize and everything moves freely. The system is wide by 4-5 inches.

Yes the pipes have numbers that you match up on each end, there's no guessing what goes where and then it will fit correctly. They are very small and a lot guys don't know their there. Match the same number on each end and you will know for sure if you have it together right.

Yeah, I know the numbers are there with the R and L designations. I'll triple check.

If the front sections (between collectors & X) have different lengths before & after the bend, turn them around. Putting the shorter length into the X narrows them, longer length widens them.
Some parts stores carry short lengths of slip-fit 3" exhaust tubing, which you can use to make the system wider.
Not all header makers' collectors are in the same position, and TTI probably made their X-system to fit their headers.

I'm going to try to get into the garage tonight. The X pipe needs to be more narrow, not wider.

Yes, 383 with TTI headers...

Re: TTI X pipe install - having issues - 09/07/13 01:47 AM

The x pipe is simply too wide. XA30MP is the P/N which matches the sheet for 67-76 A body. I've got the elbows on the proper side per the markings. They cannot be flipped as they are flared on one side.

Guess I need to decide if I want to send this stuff back or mod it. I bought it because I was hoping it would be relatively easy to install. Not too excited about cutting it all up. I could have done that with a custom made system for a lot less money.

I bought through Mancini. I wonder if they can help out in any way.

I would call tti. I put 3 inch on a b body with a hemi and had no trouble at the x but did above axle. One side had to be trimmed. They were helpful

I agree, call TTI, my system would not fit. Turns out there was a wrong pipe in the set.
Once I got the correct piece it fits like a glove.

Send them some pics.

Re: TTI X pipe install - having issues - 09/09/13 10:41 PM

Talked to TTI. No real help. Since these are 2" headers on a low deck he claims that is attributing to the problem. I bought these headers knowing they were big so I didn't have to buy things twice when I build the larger CID stroker.

Anyway, he also said the slip elbows need to be cut down on occasion.

So, I am back to modifying things, or sending them back. Considering the restocking fee and shipping I need to think this through. Maybe someone local can make me some proper slip elbows. I'd rather not have to cut the heck out of everything.
