Valve Spring Replacement Tool?

Valve Spring Replacement Tool? - 08/27/13 11:33 AM

I may invest in a valve spring replacement tool. I would like one that can replace the springs with the engine(340:shaft mount)in the car. What do you recommend? I have seen some from $50 all the way up to $300. I want one that is safe and durable.
I found the attached on the Mancini websight. Is it a decent one to use?

Thank you.

I have the small block version of that tool. I like it.

Only shortcoming might be when working with beehive springs and their smaller retainers. It works, but it doesn't hold the retainer very securely.

Take an old spring cup and flip it over to use it on top of the retainer.

For about $5 in materials, I made this:

I wanted to paint it with a high visibility color. Later I realized it was Harbor Freight orange.

This is the best tool I have used. It works on the bigblock with shaft mounted rockers so it should work fine on the smallblock. I like the fact that you run the allen screw down and can use both hands to remove the spring as you dont have to hold the tool with one hand. Bought this at Mancini. Its not real cheap but it works great. Ron

I like that one Ron has. My triceps were sore after changing my springs!

The problem with all of them is I can't fit my big fingers in to get at the keepers. I modified mine for more clearance and now it bends. Oh well, got he job done. Never again!

Use a magnetic pick up tool. Looks like a pen but has a magnet on the end. Just reach in there and the valve locks pop out and stick to the magnet.

And a small screwdriver with grease on the tip to insert the keepers. The one 383man uses is no longer available from Mancini. They couldn't sell it for what it costs to make (they are looking into it). I think AndyF should start making them.... It works great when you have 750 lbs open pressure
