COOLING TUBES IN DEEP TRANS PAN - 08/27/13 04:41 AM

I picked up a 727 racing trans rated for 600hp,it has an extra deep pan and cooling tubes going through it,I'm going to look for a brand name in morn. The shop said you'll never see them anywhere... quite a cool idea

Mopar performance used to sell those, they were common. As I recall, a cool (pun intended) design but it meant the oil pickup could not reach deep into the pan and therefore poor circulation of fluid.

But others that ran them, will know for sure.

so what's the deal?

is air suppose to travel through them as you travel?

I hooked up a trans cooler aswell, this guy came highly reccommended from 2 shops.

Yes. I'm not sure enough air moves through those 1/4" diameter tubes to transfer much heat, though.

not sure how the air gets through them, the ones i've seen had the holes going from side to side. (if the holes went front to back, they could get plugged with debris) in theory, the surfaces of the tubes expose the trans fluid to a larger surface for heat exchanging. a good trans cooler placed after the radiator cooling tank should work well enough by itself. the pan is deeper, but as mentioned above, you don't get to pickup from the bottom of the pan. you do get a slightly larger fluid capacity though.

brand name Derail maybe?(spelling?) they have a lot of stuff like that.

I have seen the tubes either way depending on the trans.

we ran them on the turbo400 pontiac trans,turbo350 chebby trans mostly.

they say right on the sales pitch not recomended for 4x4 use due to clogging.

IMHO, I would think one would keep them flushed out when running them on dirt roads/off road. I know I did.

At my house, if you left the car sit for more than a week, the mud wasps would have all those tubes plugged up.
