05 dakota idle problem - 08/25/13 12:55 AM

Recently the idle on the dakota has been varying up and down, up and down whenever its in park or sitting at a traffic light. Doesn't matter if its hot or cold. Just moves between 700 and 1100 rpm. Need some ideas where to start looking or changing.

Thanks, alexdodge

Check the battery first.Have a load test done as a weak battery creates all kind of problems with them. The IAC might need cleaned and or the EGR also and the throttle plates. Is the check engine light on?Rocky

Had the same issue with my '96 Dak 3.9...pulled and cleaned the IAC valve, ran perfect after that. It mounts on the top rear of the throttle body with a couple of Torx head screws. Here's a shot of an old one.

Also make sure the TPS has a steady voltage reading. I had many with a bad TPS do that. Many times when the idle flucuates its becaue something is telling the PCM to move the IAC motor. When the TPS volts changes at idle the PCM thinks you steped on the gas and will bring the idle up some. Ron
