1970 CA emissions gas tank question - 08/22/13 07:51 PM

I am going to change the gas tank on my '70 Dodge Dart that was originally equipped with the CA emissions package. That means the tank has the 4 hoses on the left side that go...? My car is exempt from smog inspections here. Do I need the 4 hoses or can I just use the standard tank that doesn't have them?

Yes you should have the 4 tubes, they go up to the vent tube in your trunk next to the filler tube. Yes you can use a tank without them but your vapor return line will also need to be eliminated. They are available as a reproduction with the tubes if you want to use them

I'm getting the new tank to do an in-tank fuel pump for EFI and will be running a return line. Does any of that matter? Is there an advantage to having the vapor return line?

I was just reading up on the vapor emissions control system on the internet and it appears that at some point there was a line from the tank to a charcoal canister, and/or the PCV valve. All that stuff is long gone. So, anyone know what my options would be now?

No charcoal canister for the 1970 model year, that came to be for the 1971 model year.

you can cheat a wee bit- use the old return line for the efi return- but at the tank- use one of the lines for the efi return- cap off the rest. use a gas cap that has a vent or you will cause the tank to collaspe due to the canning effect.

Sounds like a good idea except I don't really want to change the gas cap as it is kind of a critical part of the car's appearance.
