Champion Rad and OEM electric fan setups - 08/12/13 04:20 AM

What fans are you guys using on your Champion Radiator setups? I am currently running a 26" fifth avenue rad and clutch fan, but would like the ability to cool the car down when it is not running as it gets hot with a filled block. This is going to be going into a 71 a-body. I know some vendors sell aftermarket fans for these rads, but I find the quality of aftermarket fans to be crappy to be honest, and I know the OEM's can move some serious air.

If anybody has any pictures or info about what they used or are going to use that would be great! I am thinking of a 26" core for mine since I think it makes sense to use the biggest you can fit.

Probably due to the chinese brand that chinese radiators seem to use most of the time ?

I use a pair of high output Spal fans on my setup (non Mopar) and they work excellent.

For a killer OEM setup, the Mercedes one seems to really blow.

Here's a Mercedes fan fit. I can't imagine it would fit on a A body as I had to cut down my water pump shaft a hair to get it to fit in my Coronet. Of course there may be more clearance with a small block

Side view. Had to make these brackets to attach it. Radiator has a thick frame that is not part of the core.

That will do it but, be warned that fan draws 40+ amps!

Say goodbye to anything factory about your alternator and charging circuit.

Not saying it's not a good idea but you will need to plan around this fan if you want to run it.

I run the dual BeCool fan module in my Charger. I want to say the fans are made by Spal. It keeps my BB stroker cool on a 26" Summit aluminum radiator. I have never had the engine get over 190* idling in traffic on a hot day with the A/C on. My setup also only draws 20 amps while running.

This moparts member https://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/show...e=1#Post6953270 makes the controller for the fan and it is nice.

It starts very soft and will only run as fast as it needs to. It has several stages of speed so you never get the hit of 40 amps.

Just in case I bought a gm alt. that will put out 94amps at idle and 145 amps at speed.

My car also has a 493 stroker with A/C and I never have to worry about overheating.

I've done my research on the Mercedes fan, and it seems like its quite an expensive setup, and there is the issue of who you buy it from and the quality of it. It definitely works well, but Im looking for something more like a junkyard fan setup that fits nice on one of these Champion rads. Just want to see what others have fabbed up or made work.

I am running a 120 amp Denso alt so hopefully I am okay with the charging system and whatever fans I decide to run.

Spal is what I use as well.

if your running a big block and a motor plate its tough to find a factory fan thin enough to fit. I have a ford contour dual setup on my car with a double pass crossflow rad that's 28 wide. It does an ok job of cooling my 499. But pulls a lot of amps. I cant seem to run it on 1 controller as it will burn it out. I have had to hook it to a toggle switch. But my 120 amp alt has no problem keeping the volts up when there on.

Also, this is for a small block car. Should have mentioned that in the original post.

I used a universal Summit rad with a HHR fan. Had to trim the rad support and move the rad slightly forward for the fan assembly to clear the water pump pulley. Small block duster. Sorry, no info on the Champion fit.

I don't know how your car is wired but if you wire the fans to pull from the battery, the only time your fan's current won't be going through the ammeter is when the car is OFF. If the car is running (most likely) then the current is flowing from the alternator ---> bulkhead/fuseblock ---> ammeter ---> bulkhead ---> fusible link ---> starter relay ---> battery terminal.

So please do some research here and tap in to the alternator side of the ammeter for electrical loads. This will also keep your ammeter honest as drawing fan current towards the battery will show up as a charging condition on the gauge!

That's good to know, I burned up 2 hayden controllers. I will have to try the spal. My car is wired like a race car so no worry about the amp gauge it's not in use.

My Mercedes fan is wired directly to the alternator.
Works like a champ!
