Magnum 500 wheels question

Magnum 500 wheels question - 08/11/13 05:07 PM

I purchased a set of "Ford" Magnum 500 wheels to install on my '67 Satellite and they don't fit the hub. Correct bolt pattern but the axle hubs are too large diameter to fit the rims.
What do I do?

I don't recall ever having that problem; what I noticed was that clip-on weights on the inside of Ford 14x7s would hit the edge of the '68-'70 Mopar upper control arm. Those were drum brake cars.
You could try a 1/4" spacer ring; any thicker than that and there's not much thread engagement on stock studs.
If you use spacers and their holes are too big to be captured by the studs (meaning they move around on the drum), a few dabs of weatherstrip adhesive will hold them in place.
Should be a good market for 15x8s, as they fit the '68-later Bs fine.

Some Ford rims have a smaller register. You can open the hole up so they fit.Thats the easiest and safest way.Im not a fan of spacers.Rocky

Someone out there should know if the hub sizes changed or something. It's doesn't seem to be a huge difference but I don't want to screw anything up getting the dremel <sp> out .
I might just mark were the hub hits and try relieving both the rim and hub a little.

Topside, thanks for responding.
I won't use spacers but thanks for the input.
If this turns into a nightmare, I'll sell the rims off and save my penny's for some alloy wheels instead.
Too many early B-Body's with Magnum 500's anyway!
I would be happy with a style similar to the Torque Thrusts.

I feel like I'm loosing my mind! This issue bothered me so much that I re-reviewed what the hell was going on and found 2 rims fit perfectly and 2 don't. The first one I grabbed didn't fit so I expected all 4 to be the same trouble. It seems that there is some fitment issues, I don't know if forcing them on would be a good idea, they can't be too far off. I will take pictures of both up close. Maybe relieving the rim would be a better idea than both the hubs and rims.

Magnum 500 don't truly register on the center hub anyways. Neither will most aftermarket rims.

Magnum 500 center on the lug tapers. And old magnum 500's will wear out the lug tapers and mushroom them out. Sometimes will cause a lug nuts to keep loosening up since they almost or are bottoming out on the flange behind the rim.

Are you having an issue with the front rims or rear?

I'd guess the stamping for the center is tight on the bearing snout in the front rims.

some pictures. look where the hub contacts the inside of the rim. I cant even force them to start to go on. hard to believe but even the stamp numbers inside the rims are the same. WTF?

Will the 1 taht are tight on the front fit the rear??? Its a common known fact that the Mopars have a larger hub than the Fords...

Re: Magnum 500 wheels question - 08/12/13 02:43 PM

i put the '67 Satellite up on the rack and pulled one front and one rear to test fit the "Ford" Magnum 500 15x8's and two rims don't fit and two do. It seems that the inside of the rims that don't fit were not pressed correctly and the concave area that rides on the axle or hub is too tight.(see previous pictures) I will relieve them to fit without modifying the axle nor the hubs. I don't think it will be too much grinding.

Wow !!! I bought set of (5) 15x7 Road Wheels from Specialty Wheel, for my 1970 Sport Satellite. They fit perfect, and have the outside powder coated black, so I use the trim ring - just the way the original 14x6 road wheels were on the car.

I put the 14 x 7 ford magnums on my 69RR. They had small built up areas (almost like a spot weld) which register on the hubs. I lightly ground these off and they now fit. I have drum brakes and they needed a spacer to work on front.
