timing chain ??? (simple for some) - 08/11/13 08:22 AM

Just trying to get some work done on the dart, im pritty sure i used the outer 0 on the crank cog last time i put a small block together on the timing chain. 25 year's later id like to be sure that's correct before i seal it off, anybody got a pic of how it should look or can you tell me inner or outer 0 on the timing chain crank cog. thanks

Put the crankshaft in position so the woodruff key is at 1:30 clock position (when viewing from front of eng), and the "dot" should be straight up. That would be the outer dot, as you must have an advance-retard timing set.

To go straight up use the keyway with the inner zero on it & that sets the tooth position of the outer zero (the dot). I would suggest degreeing it with all the crappy tolerances in parts these days & if advancing/retarding iirc the square is advanced & the triangle is retarded but not sure if they are all 4 deg or if some sets are 2 deg. As you know adv/ret will change VP clearance. OT someone asked about this the other day on a jumped timing chain thread, on a SB 1 whole tooth off is gonna change phasing 15.6 deg

in hughesengine instruction sheet for cam swap

you line up the crank at 12 oclock with cam gear at 6 oclock, dot to dot.

then rotate crank one full turn to get the cam gear dot at 12 oclock and the crank gear at 12 oclock.

THEN drop the dist in with the rotor at #1 cap term setting it just a little before the rotor is lined up with cap term AND damper set at 10* BTDC.

this will give a instant start up and will not be 180* out.

from the factory service manual

thats what it calls for per the manual.

BUT when you drop the dist in with rotor pointing at #1 term on cap,it will be 180* out of time.

I have done it that way for 30 yrs and always have been 180* out and have to reset dist on my engine every time.

now here in 2013 I swap in a hughes cam and read the instructions to turn it 1 full turn on the crank to get both dots 12 oclock high and set the dist to #1 term on cap with damper 10* BTDC.

it turned 1/2 turn of crank and fired right up and idled.

I just put another one in this week and just set the dots at 12 oclock high and set damper/dist 10*/#1 term on cap.
set curb idle to 2300 rpm fired it off and 1/2 turn on crank it fires and comes up to 2300 rpm for the 20 min break in on cam.

just sayin

Did anybody proof read those FSMs back then? Both sprockets labeled camshaft...

thanks guy's, its so much easyer with some simple instructions to follow. iv got a factory manuel sitting next to the motor but only use it for torque settings, no good for after market timing chains.

I've had after market timing sets that have to be degreed to have the cam installed correctly, on those you can not get the dots lined up perfectly. The cam dot will not align perfectly with the crank dot, the dot will be off a tiny bit either way, not perfect One tooth on the cam gear is right at 12 degrees retarded or advanced Degree it

i will degree it, maybe tonight if it's warm enough to play in the barn. iv never degreed a cam before but have allway's wanted to learn, so this will be the motor to learn on.

I sent a shovelhead over there and about to advertise it....if you are in the market.

Is that constructive?

Aside from that....I have a cam degree wheel if you need to borrow one.

If you ain't already I'd checkout Frankendusters' nearby cam degree thread

Mine is the last of them pretty much....'84 Shovel (kick start with a belt drive)

Has a reco'd trans and motor was done with an S&S top end..

PM me with an offer.

And cool deal you already have the degree wheel.
