Replacement squareback alternator that isn't junk?

Replacement squareback alternator that isn't junk? - 08/09/13 11:42 AM

Purchased an AC-DELCO alternator 2 years ago for my Duster, what a hunk of garbage! Holes stripped out, diodes fell apart, threads shotpeened all to hell.

"remanufactured in China" stamped on the case, 'nuff said.

Does anyone sell an rebuilt alternator that isn't garbage anymore? All I want is a roughly stock looking alternator with a stock 60 amp rating.

Over at Summit they have "New Tech" natural finish alternators, has anyone tried one of these?

There is also a Powermaster here-

I'm curious, neither states if they are new or reman alternators.

Thoughts?

I have been running new Bosch alternators in two cars for over 10 years now, no problems.

Bosch lists only reman for a '74, AL504X and AL502X (single or double pulley)

I'm looking around for a shop that sells them now, will consider one as an option. Has to be better than the junk ac-delco is selling now.

If you look at the pictures they have posted, they have the "revised" design cases which were used in the 80's, just an FYI.

You can tell from the gap between the cases. There is also a subtle difference in the distance from the center of the pulley to the mounting point, I know I was comparing them yesterday when swapping parts to get one good alternator. They are NOT identical as they claim, there is a slight shrouding around the case ears too. Place the alternators side by side and you can't miss it.

That 70's looks to be a round square back with a round back front, most vendors will use what works or what they have.Try and find one rebuilt by Cardone, they are about the closest or they will do yours.

Nope, it has the same diodes as the later one not the early press in units.

Bosch has a series of picture on their site, I just picked the side view to show the gap in the center.

I just checked Cardone's site, they don't rebuild alternators.
