Big Block Swap Wire Harness ? - 12/11/08 08:07 AM

I'm going to put a 440 in my 74 (318) challenger. Will the small block wire harness work? I know the difference with the distributor but is everything else the same. Also could I buy a harness for an earlier challenger that came with a BB or would there be different conections for the earlier cars? Thanks for any help. Steve

It will work just fine, you just need longer wires for the dist and coil and ECU if you mount in a different location.

Thanks, I figured that a new harness would be overkill but if it saved some wiring problems later it would be worth it.

I went the other way, I put a big block harness in my 340 car. It was a good harness, and it had the A/C wiring, so I decided to use it. All I had to do was shorten the distributor leads, which were dried out anyway. The alternator leads were dried out too, so I just did both using the same color wire, soldered everything, and re-used the original connectors or ones that matched pretty close. It looks and works great, no problems yet.
