Short Spark Plugs For 440 - 08/06/13 01:10 AM

What brand and part number short plugs should I run in my 73 440 hp?
It's got factory electronic ignition with an aftermarket distributor.

Probally not out there, are thay the standard 14MM 5/8 reach spark plugs now or are they the tapered seat plugs from a industrial or motorhome motor? You said 1973 440 HP so I would assume there the stanard old type production plugs like the Champion RJ12YC or RJ14YC, yes? If so Accel may have one part number that may work, maybe not Sorry I can't help anymore than that

Is there an Autolite equivalent?

My bad on the thread lengths, I'm sure that they are 3/8, not 5/8 when you say short length are you talking about the length that screws into the head or the length of the porclyn that the spark plug wires slide onto There where, are, some made that are shorter on the outside to clear headers, thats the ones I was thinking about. I use to use Autolite #74,73 and 72 non resitor plugs for drag racing, those would be AR72,AR73 and so on now. The same heat range Autolite resitor plug numbers are #85,84,83 and so on for the same heat range as the racing plugs now

I was looking on the Autolite website and they say that the AR73 and AR72 plugs are not shorty plugs. I'm hoping to find something in Autolite or an equivalent, because I can't afford $8.00 a piece for NGK 7177 plugs right now. The Autolite's are less than half the price of NGK's. This is a driver at the moment and it's causing me headaches to have it laid up. I have new wires to put on it, but don't want to install them without more clearance, because I don't want to take the chance of burning up the boots on the new wires. I bought wires with 90 degree boots instead of straight ones like were on it. Right now money is REALLY tight, but I need this rig to drive. Yeah, I know, waa. lol

Standard plugs shouldn't be any problem.
Is this because of headers or missing heat shields?

I appreciate your input, but the plugs that you are showing are .750 reach. I have stock heads and the plugs are approximately .375 reach.

This is because of headers.

Has anyone ever used Accel 0437S-4 spark plugs? Jeg's is showing them to fit big Mopars as well as a whole s**tload of GM stuff.

Why make it hard ???...It's a 73 440...I'd go to the local parts store and get a set of champion RJ12YC plugs and would'nt look back... Only other advice I could give is to OPEN every box and check the tip to make sure it's centered and intact...Quality control has'nt been the greatest lately but if you hand pic them in person it eliminates the problem...That's what I do...

I have a set of RJ12YC plugs. They put my spark plug wire boots too close to my headers and I've fried 4 already. This is why I'm looking to use a shorty plug. I bought new wires with 90 degree boots instead of straight boots, but I still have a clearance issue. Don't want to replace wires every week.

In an Autolite plug .. # FRM 295 is listed as the only short racing plug for 440 eng. it is 1.97 ea at summit.

Can you dimple the header tube to gain clearance for the boots ??
I've learned to mock up the headers, plugs etc... and massage the tubes where it's needed to avoid the headache after the install...I know it's not helping you now but clearancing the tube is still probably the best solution and does'nt cost anything but time...

Re: Short Spark Plugs For 440 - 08/07/13 05:11 AM

Yeah, I tried that, but the guy I bought the truck from welded the whole exhaust system. No bolt on, welded the pipes right to the header. I'd have to cut up my exhaust system to get the headers out.
I just bought a set of Accel 437S. My local O'Reilly's had them in an 8 pack #8197. Bought them cheaper than I could get them from Jeg's or Summit and I didn't have to wait 5 days for them to get here or pay for shipping. They are about 3/8" shorter overall than RJ12YC's and Autolite 85's. Should give me the extra clearance I need with the 90 degree boots. Thanks all you guys for your input and suggestions.
