Rotella T 15W40 - 07/27/13 07:48 PM

I was told to run Rotella T 15W40 as the engine oil that I should use because it is high in zinc, any input on that?

Thats what just got used in my 92 Dakota 5.2 this morning.

I switched to the diesel oil when I bought it to help it last longer, and since I drive interstate 60+ miles a day.

I have used it in many different gas engines with no harmful results.

I don't have the specific numbers, but most oils have been getting reductions in zinc over the years, including diesel oils. One needs to do some research to keep up with the latest. Can't take it for granted. Best oils will be advertised as having extra zinc.

The zinc is mainly to protect flat tappets. But zinc has an adverse affect on the newer catalytic converters which is why they started removing it.

While Rotella is a great oil that I use in everything from my diesel Ram to my ATV's and motorcycles the amount of zinc has been reduced over the years.

I would research what zinc levels are currently in the 15w40 oil and see if your satisfied, you might find you still need a zinc additive.

I use Rotella in a lot of my vehicles, but those with FT cams get zinc additive too; as noted, Rotella has less zinc now. Only the specialty oils have the old levels.

i would use valvoline VR1 10/30 if its a new tight engine or 20/50 if its got some miles on it.

These are good oils for flat tappets without going to an expensive oil. Don't spend too many brain cells on Zinc,ZDDP or other myths or additives.
