90* Oil Filter Adaptor

90* Oil Filter Adaptor - 07/27/13 03:43 PM

Was out changing the oil and filter on my '71 Dart Swinger with a 318.
It has the 90* oil filter adaptor on it. Are these adaptors adjustable as far as the angle in which the filter is "clocked"?
It was a pain in the a$$ removing the filter (nearly horizontal) and no room to swing the band wrench.
Or, can the adaptor be removed altogether and the filter be screwed onto the engine block?

Yes but you'd want to get a new gasket set (MP has the 3 piece set) & start fresh & clock it where you want it when you install the new filter. Felpro has the large ring gasket seperately

I was going to use the 90 degree adapter on my small block. I have Doug's headers. I decided against it after reading many post about the adapters becoming a restriction of sorts. So I settled on buying the adapter plate and gasket for a straight application and then bought a case of WIX short filters to have on hand. The WIX stubby filter goes right on even with the headers and I can much better get a wrench on it. Also, I had a 90 degree on another car with headers and every time I removed the filter the headers would get drowned in motor oil. The regular filter would allow the oil to drip straight down into a pan without getting it all over the headers. Just my experience.

X2 X2. If you can get a "teacup" filter in there it'd be better but with less filtering material because of the shorter case you might want to change more often. You could drill additional holes in the round baseplate before you install it. If keeping the 90 deg adapter you can port the sharp corners on its' insides & drill more holes in the big bolt

Do not use that one. It is for a 318. the 340/360/5.9 Magnums have either 6 or 8 holes in them and flow more oil. Your main bearings will thank you for it.

or one like this can be made by drilling extra holes.
