And why doesn't anyone do it? Per the FSM it says to coat the head gasket lightly with it when installing head gaskets, but you never hear of anyone doing it, why not? And what type of sealant was/is it?

Probably something like coppercoat. The head gaskets made today don't need sealer.

I'm guessing something more like Indian Head. But modern gaskets don't need it. They are designed and manufactured to go in dry and using something extra may actually make them less reliable.

Years ago I bought the recommended head gasket spray from Ed Hamburger. The speed shop that sponsored me was owned by a FORD racer. Boy did he laugh when the order arrived and we pealed off the label and it said Ford Motor Co. underneath it. I now use High-tac spray on every head gasket I use with excellent results even thou it says install dry. Also clean both the head and block surface with lacquer thinner to remove all oil before installation.
