I can't see any appreciable difference between the 2. The Duster has a larger (heavier) front bumper, but only by a couple of pounds.

I would think they would be within 50lbs of each other ?

Sorry. ALL Dusters/Demons/Dart Sports had the same 108 wheelbase. The Dart 2 and 4 door sedans had the 111 WB along with the Plymouth Scamps from 1971-76.
NO Demon or Dart Sport had a 111 WB.

Mike, double check the weight on the Demon.

The only real differences between the two are the front clips. I haven't weighed the two to compare but it's not going to be much difference. The Demon has more parts (fender extensions, etc. and a slightly longer hood), but on a guess I'd think the (equally equipped) Duster would still weigh just a little more simply because the front bumper is bigger on a Duster.

I don't know which is lighter, but at least back in the day NHRA had them at different weights for SS classes; I know of one car that was run in both configurations depending on what records they were hunting between SS/I - SS/L. They did in fact change the noses and the tail panel.

The posted shipping weight on a 71 340 Demon is 3165, 25 more than a Duster.
All Demons have a heavier shipping weight than an equally equipped Duster.

There are some typos on that page. They don't list a 72 340 Demon, instead they list a 340 Dart Sport.

Re: What's lighter Duster or Demon? - 06/30/13 10:43 PM

1971---198--318--340
Demon--2845-2995-3165
Duster-2825-2920-3140

1972---198--318--340
Demon--2800-2995-3125
Duster-2780-2875-3100

That's probably a typo in my listing for the 72 318 Demon, just copied from the 71 weight.

I wonder what makes a 318 car 170lbs lighter than a 340 car? Dual exhaust vs single? Ralle dash vs base dash cluster assembly, single 4 vs 2bbl intake and carb?

Seems a bit excessive to me?

This should make up most of the 170lb,
904 vs 727
7.25 vs 8.75

Yea I nixed those two because a manual trans car would have the same trans and a fair number of 318 cars came with 8.75" rears.

But more so than others, the 7 1/4 was the more common rear that im guessing is what the shipping weights were using.

Those were both '75-'76. The lightweight items had to counter the weight of the normal 75-6 trans and hood, etc.; but they were also still burdened by the increased weight of the 5 mile per hour bumpers, heavier crash protection vs. the 71 cars, heavier exhaust systems, ie. catalytic converters in addition to mufflers, and even bigger brakes and wheels/tires.
The were "light" for 1975-6 cars, but undoubtedly, still heavier than the '71 stuff.

If your goal is to have the absolute lightest ov either... get a 70 Duster and make it into either 71. They got heavier year by year... and between even 70 and 71 there were many differences that all add up. If i was going to build a 71 Demon i'd buy a 70 Duster and clone it. Easier to find, cheaper, and lighter. As far as just the two choices you listed though... the Demon does seem to be on average (posted weights) about 15-20lbs lighter... which makes sense to me looking at either car.

The shipping weights are with certain mandatory equipment, yada, yada, yada...I wouldn't read too much into them. Bottom line is that they are close enough that the difference would be negligeable IMO.
