70 / 71 Hemi carb #'s

70 / 71 Hemi carb #'s - 06/27/13 11:37 AM

Can someone tell me what the correct Carter carb #'s should be for a 1970 Hemi 4spd?
All I'm able to find out is 4745s for the rear and 4742s for the front. However, what should the letter / number be before these numbers?

For example...
I've read that ML9 4745s

M = Modified (71 carb)
L= Month first assembled (November 69)
9 = Year carb assembled 1969
4745S = 1970 426 Hemi Manual Trans, Rear Carb

Thank you for any assistance you can provide.

Correct, but I'd reword the first line to clearify:

M = Modified (which in this case means it's a modified 1970 Hemi carburetor to be used in a 1971 Hemi application)

4745s is the correct 1970 4 speed Hemi carburetor. The date code preceeding the number varies, a single letter of the alphabet (the month, letter "I" was skipped) followed by the year it was built.

So you're saying a nonmodified 70 Hemi 4spd carb would be the same numbers less the "M"?

Exactly, however.........There are is one wildcard circumstance. If a 1970 4745,4746,4742 carb was originally assembled in December of 1969 the date code would have been M9. If one of these carbs was pulled from stock and modified for 71 use they did not add a second M. So, a 70 carb dated M9 would be 100% correct on EITHER a 70 or 71 car.
