where is the timing tab located on a /6 - 06/25/13 05:31 PM

I have a '68 225 and it has no timing tab. I also have a '76 Duster with a 225-are the tabs located in the same place? If not then where?
thanks for any info

Not sure about 1968 but my 1965's is located about 1 or 2 o'clock on the timing cover and is hidden by my aftermarket a/c idler pulley. I have to remove the belt and pulley to use a timing light. If yours is all stock it should be pretty easy to see, might just be covered with dirt.

There have been several different slant six timing tabs over the years. I think this is correct: From 61 through 66 or so, there was a bolt-on tab on the driver's side lower front corner of the timing cover. Next version (67-77) had a tab welded onto the timing cover. Here's a picture of the latter I pulled off another forum:

Of course, your 68 may or may not have its original 68 motor. There was also a post-77 version on the passenger side. Here's a pic of the earlier (61-66) bolt-on tab (also lifted from another forum):

And finally, because the tabs were in different places, the timing marks on the crank pulley/damper are in different places to match whatever tab a particular motor had.

Hey thaks for all the replys. The car is a '63 Valiant convert with a '68 engine so you are correct-it's not original.

It's not geasey, in fact that area of the engine is spotless and freshy painted because I just installed a new timing chain and gears. that's what got me into the whole timing thing.I had everything apart and wire wheeled everything and found no evedence of a tab ever being on the cover and none anywhere else!

Anyways I TDC'ed no 1 and got the rotoer pointed in the right direction and it fired right up I'll be crusin' topless for 4th o july!
thanks again -Dave
