Anyone here ever dyed their carpet? - 06/07/13 07:37 AM

I'm looking for any tips or recommendations for dyeing a faded factory carpet. What methods are out there? Will you get a good looking, evenly covered carpet in the end? If you've done this what/who's dye did you use and what were your results? Does it leave an unpleasant odor?
Thanks,
Ken.

I once dyed the console carpet in my 68 Dart from a gold color to a burnt orange.

I used the cheap RIT dye from Walmart. It took quite a few dunks into the dye to get the shade I wanted, and I must say it came out close, alittle lighter but not bad. No odor.

Not sure how easy a full piece of carpet will be how ever. I used a 5 gallon pail for the console piece. You might have to use the bathtub

After reserching the internet on auto carpet dying I dyed the faded carpet in my 71 R/T Challenger with this stuff I bought at my local Advanced Auto.

I was extremely happy with the results.

I don't have an after pic yet but my carpet was in very nice shape, just faded for the western heat as shown in the pic.

No odor, color of carpet is very consistant.

I think I used 2 1/2 cans as I did the front and back carpets with multiple coats on them, the carpets looks like new now.

Hey thanks guys, I appreciate the info. Did any of you guys have to wait any length of time for drying so you didn't get it on your feet?

I use Dupli-Color or SEM & apply it in multiple dry coats until you get the desired color. You avoid streaking that way.

Are you leaving the carpet in the car?I just did mine last week.I had the seats out figured this would be a good time to dye my carpet.I have a convertable and some parts of the carpet faded and some did not.My carpet is black..I have a thread here somwhere about this.I bought the RIT black dye powder and mixed it up and put it in a spray bottle and sprayed the carpet. It took 2 dye packs, about 6 cups of water and the carpet looks great....For black, at least, this worked.I let it dry 24 hours to be safe..
