340 Six Pack Balancer Question

340 Six Pack Balancer Question - 06/04/13 02:27 AM

I am having difficult time timing my AAR 340 stock pack. The mark is no where near where it needs to be to keep the car running.

It may be a bad balancer. Is the balancer on the 340 six pack a six pack specific part or is it a standard 340 part?

The 340 balancers are the same except for the 73 cast crank 340.. Maybe your inertia ring has slipped.

Not enough info,
stock cam?have the carbs been worked on, adjusted, are they running right?
If you are reasonably sure all the other stuff is OK,try timing it by ear until it will idle even close to OK, then go from there. You can TDC the motor carefully with an old pushrod (makeshift piston stop)and see if your dampener is close to the zeo TDC mark.
Hope this helps.

Carbs have been adjusted
New plus, wires, cap, rotor, stock cam

Starts fine, idles fine when I time by ear. As soon as a load is put on the car, i.e put it in drive, the car dies. Timed by ear to get it to this point. If I put it anywhere near the timing mark - the car wont start, idle or run.

Thanks for the advice!

Re: 340 Six Pack Balancer Question - 06/04/13 02:26 PM

The balancer slipped or you could have a 69 and older balancer. They use a different timing cover and
balancer before 1970.They were timed on the passenger side and they used a cast waterpump with the lower hose on the opposite side from the 70 and newer small blocks.

Hope this helps

Re: 340 Six Pack Balancer Question - 06/04/13 04:39 PM

simple solution..turn engine over to TDC #1 firing on the balancer..pop distributor cap and see where the rotor is pointing

if it aint pointing at #1 on the cap...balancer has spun ..

Not so simple, unless distributor went in the first time after setting TDC with a piston stop or before putting on the heads!

The answer to your (OP) p4roblem is simple to say, harder to do - find the REAL TDC. Needless to say, it cannot be done with the marks on a harmonic damper. It can be done reasonably close with a piston stop, a Sharpie, and measuring tape.

I used the KISS method on determining ifthe balancer is correct, pull the #1 spark plug, have someone else tap the starter a little at a time while you hold your finger over the spark plug hole and have them tap the atarter until is starts to blow your finger off the hole, stop there and use a long thin srewdriver to insert into the sparkplug hole and rotate the motor over until the piston reaches the top of its travel, rock the crank back and forth several times to get it where you think TDC is and then look at the timing cover marks and the balancer marks
