Oil adapter to 90 degree Help! - 06/03/13 12:28 AM

I have 1970 AAR that I'm restoring back to original, when I purchased the car it had header's with stock oil adapter. I have removed the headers and want put on a original 90 degree oil adapter back on with manifolds.

My problem once I take the oil filter off i cant get the bolt off the engine which holds the oil filter to the engine, the nut which is 1 inch, but the head of the bolt is to small and difficult to get hold to take off, any ideas?

Do not use the nut. They are square drive inside, a 3/8" extension on a ratchet will fit.

(Unless it is 1/2" it has been quite a while....)

Most of the nipples with the external hex are 1/2 in. internally and don't have the internal 3/8 sq. drive. I prefer them myself due to less restriction. As for getting them on and off, I have found that most sockets have a bit of a chamfer to them. This makes them slightly easier to slide onto a bolt head or nut, but creates a problem when dealing with thin hexs like yours. What I have found effective is to sacrifice a six point socket by grinding the opening down to the point where the chamfer no longer exists. This way you can usually get it to grip the hex. If all else fails an "easy out" or screw extracter should work. If you have to resort to this I would try to polish the scars out of the interior of the nipple before reusing it.

so you are saying I run a 3/8 drive extension through the center of the bolt? I just tried this and the 3/8 extension is to big(Fat) to got through the bolt hole?

any other ideas? I don't need to reuse the bolt since the new 90 degree adapter does not require the use of this bolt.

Grind the face off a socket or grind the 3/8 extension to fit

last one i did i use a 1/2" drive airgun with a impact socket, couple fast bumps it came right off.

seems I had to grind a 3/8" drive 3" extention to fit the small square in the center of the nipple before also. I just used my 3/8" drive airgun and spun it right out.

before I ran my 90* adaptor I drilled it out to 1/2" and used a small ball shaped stone and sanding rolls to radius/blend the turns for better flow.

if you aren't going to use the nipple and plate again, use a chisel. be careful, and not too big a hammer. just enough to get it to break loose. that thing has been on there for 40 years now.

I'd do Po'boys' trick & tap one of the holes in the flat plate CCW & see if turning the flat plate will grab the nut/insert & get it coming out. If not I'd as said grind a socket end chamfer flat & then keep the socket on the nut square as your trying to break it loose. EDIT first give the extension/socket a few good whacks straight on with a BFH. I checked one today & it has a smooth round bore inside. I coulda sworn I saw one way back that was square or hex inside

Thanks for everyone input, I finally got the bolt off using vise grips and impact!

Now I have another question, when I'm mounting the the 90 degree adapter do I use the round plate that i took off( see photo with 4 holes) between the adapter and the engine?

NO! NOOOOOO....
Don't ask me how I know this.
use the large round gasket for the housing, and the small round gaskets,one for the inside around the hollow bolt, one for the outside under the hollow bolt head.When I was about 19, that thing gave me fits!

Rob, most if not all the ones I've seen HAVE the 3/8" socket drive hex in there.You are not getting senile....

I used to worry about the "legs' on that gasket coming off and getting sucked into the oiling system, or just messing with the filter holes
(oil flows from the outside of the can thru the media,then thru the center hole back into the motor IIRC), so I would use the gaskets "loose".If all I had was the "spider" I would cut the legs off making a separate big outer, small inner.Always meant to ask Rapid or JohnRR or Andy about that, never did
(so little time, so many issues).Your call,might be fine as-is out of the box.

Correct & make sure the block recessed circular depression is completely clean of gasket material. Felpro sells just the circular gasket seperately & reportedly it is a slight bit thicker than the one that comes in the MP 3 piece kit & therefore seals a bit better tho I've used both & no issues (with everything clean). You could do a little porting of the sharp edges in the 90 deg adapter if you're OK with hidden reworking & want to improve the oiling circuit a bit (depends on how hard you plan to run it) & more oiling mods are available.

putting together the two gaskets for the bolt, one cork one metal/rubber. can anyone verify which order they go on? i have Bolt, cork and gasket.

slip the thin one on the bolt then insert the bolt/thin washer into the adapter then slip the thick cork on the bolt inside the concave face on the other end

or does one the gaskets goes between the adapter and engine? Obviously the big one does, But I confused about the two small one's now?

Me too. I suffer from ADD (all day drama) & IDGAF (I dont give a fxxx). Slip the thin one on the bolt & lodge it under the bolt head. Then insert the bolt (with the thin washer on it) into the adapter. Then on the other side add the thick cork washer to the threaded end of the bolt that protrudes from the concave face on the inside. Make sure the block circular recess is cleaned of all gasket material. Torque on the big bolt is 50 lbs (cleaned/lightly oiled threads) EDIT The thin one goes next to the bolt head (outside). The other thin one (thick cork) goes on the bolt on the (inside) AFTER you insert the bolt/thin washer into the adapter. Then the large circular gasket as you know goes in the block circular recess.

I know i used a big 1 1/4" socket with a 12" 1/2 drive extention and 1/2" drive ratchet to reach thru my headers and leverage againts the t-bar while torqueing it by hand to the german torque specs of GOODENTIGHT.
