57-64 drum removal

I am doing rear brakes on a 61 Phoenix and I removed one side drum with my puller but the other side will not budge,I even left the puller hooked up under tension for over a week and no luck, I do not have a n acetylene torch only a propane torch and that did not help as well.
Any other idea?

Make sure the brakes are backed off.Smack the center of the puller repeatedly and smack the puller crank arm keeping tension applied to the puller.Don't be afraid to smack the crap out of it and a little cursing won't hurt either.

Ok I will try that, I was kind of scared to wack the puller with the hammer.

You ARE using the correct puller, the huge giant thing that bolts to the wheel studs?

Yes its the correct puller, maybee even an old dealership tool, borrowed it from an old mechanic.

Lube the puller threads good & use an impact gun on the puller, also the hammer on the end of the bolt is effective...If that doesn't work put the nut back on but leave it about four turns loose & take the car for a drive, bumpy road, hard turns...It will come loose...

Sometimes whacking the hub with an air hammer will help(right on the hub of the drum where the axle sticks through)

Heat can help too.

I have had situations where even with a torch, a puller with an impact on it, and an airhammer, all going at the same time it wouldn't come off.

Here is the proper way to use this tool. Back off brake shoe linings. After it is secured to the hub and drum and tensioned, use a large hammer (not a sledge)and turn the crank head aprox 1/4 turn, then hit the center of the large bolt head once. repeat with increasing tension (1/4 turn aprox) and hit center of tool bolt head. Don't kill the tool but you will have to be hitting the head of it, that is how these were designed to be used.

My kids 62 had one that didnt want to come off.I just kept at it.I have an old SnapOn tool.I always keep the nut on the threads just in case they get a little screwed up that way you can clean them up with it when you back they nut all the way off.That and I used some good penetrating oil.Rocky

And the brakes.

A friend of mine has a better way that comes with a permanent solution. After fighting with and ruining one axle on his 64, he took a big hammer and drove the wheel studs back thru the drum and hub. Smack the drum a few times and it comes off. He then bought new studs and turned down the part on the stud that locks the drum to the hub until it just fit the stud holes in the drum (a couple of thou?). Now when it is brake job time he just knocks off the drums like it's 1965.
