Problems with fuel line too close to coil?

Problems with fuel line too close to coil? - 12/04/08 01:36 PM

Lately I've been getting nervous about how close the fuel line is to the coil on my 383.

I guess that is just the way they come from the factory, but it looks like a problem waiting to happen. I wish I had a picture to post, but I think most of you know what I mean.

Anyone ever had a fire from this, or has anyone moved either the line or the coil to make it safer?

I did a search here on moparts but could not find any discussion about this.

If there is no fuel leaking and the coil isn't sparking to the line how could you have a fire? It's been working that way for 40 years on a lot of cars so don't worry about it.

Thanks, Stumpy - that's what I was hoping to hear, just needed some assurance. It must be a safe design as long as the line isn't rusted through, but I would guess that someone somewhere must have had a bad experience once because of it.

I'll probably just keep a close eye on it from now on whenever I open the hood.

I had a problem once where I was using a Holley dual feed, and the carb fuel line joined the line from the pump right above the distributor. It developed a leak, and dripped right onto/into the distributor cap.... guess what happened next?

I caught it quick enough and the car was okay, a fireball through a Six Pack scoop is hard to miss!!
