What Valve Cover Gaskets with Fabed V/C's - 05/23/13 12:49 AM
The time has come to install my new MP aluminum 452 heads and the 25 year old Moroso valve covers are going away. I got a set of fabicated valve covers to go on it and was wondering what gaskets work best with these ? I have always used the rubber coated fiber gaskets with steel covers, but the fabed ones do not have the lip on the edge or the slots for the tabs on the gaskets. Thanks for the input.

I recently switched to Morosos. They aren't cheap at $40, but they maintain their shape, so those locating tabs you mentioned which are on stock replacements, aren't necessary.
Before that I was using black rubber gaskets, not sure where I got them. They had the tabs, and I've been using them with fabbed covers for years.. they were starting to get a little tired, so I splurged for the Morosos.
They both seal fine. I think the only advantage of the Morosos is, because the shape is fixed, they are quicker/easier to put back. But if you don't plan on R/R them in a hurry, the black rubber ones are great (but I don't know where to get a set). I probably would have gone with a new set of the black rubber ones if I knew where to get them.

I will only use the Fel-Pro high temp rubber coated fiber gaskets.
They are "me proof" and dont crush. I also use Indian Head to glue to gasket to the valve cover after prepping the cover. Then let the gasket and sealer set overnight before installing on the engine.
I also prefer to use the Indian Head to glue the cover and gasket to the head. And again let it set overnight, or as long as possible before snugging down the bolts.
Sure it takes some extra time, and yes its a PITA to remove the valve covers. BUT I have NEVER had a leaking valve cover since doing them this way about 15yrs ago.
And for the guys that say why do that, its so hard to remove the valve cover. I say, how often do you need to remove a valve cover on a hydraulic lifter motor? There is no need to service anything under the cover unless you over rev and bend a pushrod, or pop a lifter.
I dont mind the extra prep time, and the extra service time knowing that even if a bolt or two ever works loose I still have no leaks.

My main concernwas them keeping their shape during install. I may try the Moroso's later as the budget is tapped at the moment. Looks like the rubber coated fiber is the ticket for now. Thanks again for the input.
