'71 Plymouth heater a/c water control valve - 05/14/13 04:49 AM

Starting to put my '71 Plymouth SSP together and unfortunately I am missing the heater control valve under the hood. The car has a/c that I am going to put back together (with R-134). I see there are a few control valves out there on Ebay, etc. Which one is correct for the '71 Satellite? Anyone have a part number for the original one? Not looking for 100% correct piece just don't want to buy something that is incorrect and will not work.

It depends on whether or not you have a cable operated one or a vacuum operated one. Both are available.

If the Satt's are like the Chargers, the 71's got the vacuum operated valves. I think the 72's did as well and then 73+ got the cable operated units.

If you inspect the HVAC controls themselves, this would most likely tell you what to use. If the valve is vaccum, there will be an additional vacuum line that will run back through the firewall for the valve. Otherwise, just a cable attachment to the lever and no extra vacuum line.

I'm pretty sure mine is supposed to be vacuum operated. I just didn't know which one to buy. There are many different "configurations" on the web that say they fit the '71 Satellite. I am trying to figure out which one really will fit and operate correctly. I would love to not have to drill additional holes, etc.

Thats the one needed, posted above then. Is there a couple of holes on the passenger side of the inner wheel well?

I do have holes on the inner wheel well but I'm not sure if the bracket on the valve has the same bolt pattern.

It appears you should have the valve pictured above. I have holes in the inner fender like yours but not sure of the deminsions. I think the hole in the upper left is for the fuel line. You can get the whole thing (valve and brackets) from several sources, just shop around for the best price. Also, you'll need the vacuum can that sits under the battery tray. There's a small line that goes from the can and connects to the little nipple in the top of the valve in the pictured above. The other kind is spliced into the heater hose lines and is not mounted to the fender well and has a cable to it from the inside. A manual is good to have, it shows it. Hope this helps

The pictures, links and this description does help very much, thanks all.

I assumed the vacuum line on the valve came from the heater switch to open and close it. How does the vacuum from the can under the battery tray open/close the valve?

Unfortunately I only have a '69 Plymouth service manual.

It runs off of vacuum from the booster, and carb if memory serves me. Best thing to suggest is get the SM and its free

Thanks.

I haven't been able to find a '71 Plymouth SM that I can download.

There is also a vacum can under the battery tray for the vacum control. There's a whole bucnch of hoses that run under the dash as well. The vacum control valve is available. The can looks like the air grabber type but has an extra bend in the mounting bracket.
