I have an Eddy air gap on my 340. I want to put a TQ on but it won't fit under the hood with the adapter. Has anybody ground out the secondary opening on the air gap successfully? Were you able to drill for the back mounting holes?

Curious, what's your plan for a choke? No provision for a divorced choke on an air gap.

I know LD340s (older brother of the RPM) can be modified for a spread bore, but I've never heard of anyone doing it on an RPM. I'd be interested to see it done though. I'm running a thermoquad under my airgrabber, and I'd really like to ditch the stock dual plain in favor of an RPM.

I will do a manual choke. This is an air gap so it is taller than the RPM I believe. YOU CANNOT BEAT THE SOUND OF A tq WHEN THE SECONDARIES OPEN!!

Actually, I believe they are the same height. You can check it on Edelbrock's website.

Someone once told me the are the same height as the stock T-quad intake, but I've never verified.

I run a q-jet on my 440 rpm intake, works awsome

I have a early SB rpm intake(no airgap) on the shelf,I dont see it getting hogged out for a spredbore carb.

just under the machined carb flange the intake plenum swells out and a spred bore will cut thru the sides.

I post pics later if you want to see the early rpm intake.

my buddys rpm airgap is the same way at the carb flange and have the same hieght measurment.

it taller than my LD intake for sure.

IMHO,adaptor is the only way for spredbore to fit the rpm intake.

I run a SB & BB with q-jets and adaptors on each

of course I have a truck with a SS hemi scoop on the hood so no clearance problems for me.

you could maybe do it if you could get someone handy with a mig or tig to build the flange area out enough to clear the secondaries and to retap the bolt holes etc. Or maybe scrounge a LD340, not a lot of difference performance wise. Love the TQ's

I looked into it a little bit on my old motor, but there just isn't enough meat in the plenum walls and mounting surfaces to switch to a spread bore config.

and yes, according to edelbrock, the RPM and air gap are the same height from the front and rear rail of the block--the cast in valley pan in the air gap dips down into the block a little bit, so they look taller off the engine.

you'll have to get an LD340 and mod it if you don't want an adapter, or get a street demon carb, which is kinda like a modern t-quad, with a dual mounting base plate...if I still had my 5th ave, I probably would have picked one of these up to try out, because I could never get the 600cfm eddie AFB to run 100% right...

Went to an adapter for my install, then a dropped base air-cleaner assembly...had to go 16" diameter with a 4" element to get the clearance needed for my coupe.

Here is how they mated up:

Beyond this, by far the best way to get a TQ on any of the modern intakes is to find a decent 9800 series carb...has an electric choke which is part of the carb body. This was a Carter aftermarket unit...

If your intake will be dedicated for thermoquad use you can also use the adapter and do some carefull blending with a die grinder to both the adapter and intake to open things up for the larger secondaries.

Keep in mind you will be making a tall intake even taller.

I just bought a Demon street demon carb for my 340 wit a LD340 intake. I had to buy a seperate throttle stud($20.) from Demon for my throttle and kickdown. So we haven't figured out a way to make it fit and have everything line up. The throttle cable when hooked does not line up straight they way it should. I watched a video with Scott Witmer I believe the owner Demon Carb installing a street demon on a 340. they used a OEM throttle stud. I sent sent him an email on installing the OEM stud because you can't get it to slide between the carb body and hole where it mounts. His answe was you have to drill a bigger hole in the new carb linkage and discounnect the linkage to get it into position(none of this is mentioned in the video) Nothign like drilling holes into a new carb to make things fit. Or buy a aftermarket stud from the place you bought the carb.Only to find out they machined the stud size wrong.
Needless to say I'm not to happy with Demon and their customer service right now. I can get everything to to work with 2" machine bolt, but it looks cobbed up.
Anyone else have this problem and a way to fix it?
