Thrust Buttons - Do I need them?

Thrust Buttons - Do I need them? - 05/24/08 05:20 PM

I was taking out the center section of my 8.75 rear end (for my E-body Cuda) to install it in a new 'B' body rear end I purchased from Dr. Diff and found the thrust buttons sitting in the bottom of the old case. I didn't know what they were at the time so I went ahead and put the new stuff together without them. Do I really need them in?
Thanx.

If it`s a power lock sure grip and you`re using original style tapered wheel bearings you will never be able to set the axle end play without them.

Do you have green bearings? If so, then you don't need them. Otherwise, yes you need them to set end play.

back in sept I did a center section swap on my car and put in a 3.91 742 case sure grip. I didn't know about the thrust button thing at the time and just put it together, I set the end play (stock axles/bearings) by hand to where I could just barely feel the axle move in and out thinking that was good enough. It did take a good couple of turns on the adjuster to get it tight but there was an open case in there before if that makes a difference. I never did look inside the case to see if the buttons were in there. If they were missing would I have been able to set the endplay at all? And would the bearings be howling by now? The car has maybe 1000 miles on it since the swap.

You wouldn't have been able to set it all.

The axles would be flopping all over, and giving you all kinds of problems.

After 1000 miles you are for sure good to go
