I want to replace my 318 out of my 70 Belvedere for a 440 small block. Does anyone know anything about these engines? I really want big block power out of a small block. I know that 340 engines are very good and wanted motors. I don't really want to put a blower or turbo on my 318. I am under the impression that a lot of parts will go on the 440 off of the 318. I have hooker super comp headers and I was told they will bolt on as well. I have a 518 dakota transmission in it already. Any information would help. Thank you.

purchase Jim Szilagyi SB stroker bible. It & other builds are in there. It's got some good rebuilding info but it is more of a listing of part #'s needed for different combo's & yes it is very high dollar stuff

a .020 over 340 or .060 over 360 = 4.060 Bore and 4.25" stroke = 440 cubic inches.

Pretty simple. I have a new crank for sale to build one in a 340 block in the classifieds.

I had no idea you could get 440" out of a small block.. you're saying a PRODUCTION block will allow a 4.25" swing? that's crazy

Mopar Performance, Jegs and Summit to name a few sell them. It is a .20 stroked 340. The motor is real. The problem is the motor cost $12,000-$16,000. Alum heads and high dollar extras come with them but still a lot of money. I assure you they are real.

Mostly just the outside bolt on stuff. If the headers are a good match for the new motor, the will bolt on. Oil pan, valve covers, timing chain cover, pulleys, motor mounts with interchange.

But most of the stuff in the long block will be new and need to be different to match the HP level. You will for sure need different good flowing heads to match whatever HP level you are shooting for.

Just don't get too tied up on the "440" or 4.25" stroke crank. Look at the $$/HP and a motor that matches the street-ability you are expecting/wanting.

Like, if you've got to pay an extra $1000 to get 15 more cubic inches, I just don't think it's worth it.

Now they are starting to make off the shelf kit for those bigger cranks that have lowered the cost of them. Do you homework!

The 360 vs 340 block to start with is not a big difference. Don't pay through the nose just to have a 340 block over buying a cheaper 360 block.

As you seem to be hung up on "bigblock" displacement numbers, here's another...392. That's a 4" crank in your 318 block with a modest overbore.

It sounds to me like you'd be hard pressed to use all the power a decent 318 stroker would make. Why don't you start there and after you have your chassis figured out and all of the breakable parts upgraded, then it's time for the 440 smallblock.

A 518 can be built to handle the output of a 440. However, putting a 518 into an A-body is another pretty involved piece of work. Fabrication is required. It'd be much better to, again, start out with either a built 904 variant or a 727.

Otherwise it sounds to me like a guy who's never built a birdhouse trying to build a mansion. He'll get there, but it'd be easier to start with something a little more modest first.

Not hung up on anything. I own a 318 Belvedere 2 door 1970 B-Body. No A-body here. The 518 and 8.75" rear in it are already built to handle over 600 hp. Not my first rodeo. I don't see the point to spend a boat load of money making the original 318 stroked. I can leave the 318 the good dependable motor it is and buy the 440 or something like it already built. Everything I have done to my car can be removed and the original stuff put right back on. I want power and I don't want to change everything over for a big block. I was just simply asking about a 440 small block. I have done lots of research. I was just asking about the motor and the next thing I know I am a "bird house builder."

not up on my SB's but the 440 can be done however I think the more popular combo is a 392. My buddy runs a 392 w/ old w-2 heads and runs low 8's (has run 7's)... it is a chassis car w/ a 97mm turbo thou

I had a stroked 318, 390" motor that made 525-550 hp with ported edelbrocks, a solid cam and pump gas. I got unlucky, put a big hole in the side of it.

I now have a 454" small block. The new motor is more radical, but with no tuning on the very first pass ever, has been faster lifting at 900' than the 390 ever was.

BIG small blocks are fun, but they need A LOT of head and a lot of $$,$$$ to make them work.

Another option thats $1300 less with a milder cam. Both are assembled by Stanton Racing.

410 crate motor

I have the same idea as you,I have a 410 MP crate motor waiting to replace a 318 in my 72 Charger. I want a 5 Speed behind it and I'm holding off the install while waiting for reviews and availability of Passon's transmission.

It's expensive but it's not a rebuild,everything is new. The 340R block accounts for alot of the price. I got lucky and got mine for $6500 by winning a charity auction.

If you're not hung up on this particular build go through the For Sale section here. I bought a 48* 380 W2 engine off of a member here a few years back. I'd run that against that 440 any day of the week. Top shelf race parts for quite a bit less money with similiar power. I think there's a 422 for $6500 still there.

I'm happy with my 430 cube small block - BPE rotating assembly was the best option for me.

KJ, sorry, I got confused.

So, yes, go ahead and get the 440. Be prepared for a boatload of torque. No need for 4.10s in the Dana.

There are enough heavy duty 518 types behind Diesels that I think one can be built to take just about anything.
