1968 340 Camshaft ID - 04/14/13 10:25 PM

Just bought a 68 340X motor and started to tear it down. Was told motor sat for 20+years?? just getting into bottom end.
My Question
How do I ID the present camshaft while its still in the block?
I will put dial indicator on lifter to measure lift but how about duration & centerline??
Should I install a degree wheel and check it that way?
What about the crank & rod bearings (no oil in there)
Motor spins ok but was not sealed > its dirty (stored poorly)
with carbon in cylinders but no sludge
I dont want to damage crank
thanks
tom

If you have reason to believe it is a stock cam it could be a 68 only stick cam. (it would need to be an early 68 motor, measure the lift and that will tell the story). If it is an aftermarket cam you would need to pull it and hope there is a manufacturer number on it and try to look it up.

The best thing may be to measure the duration at .050 and lift for int and ex, then lobe sep, and you can decide if it would suit your needs.

From the looks of things I would consider a refresh/rebuild and new cam.
