Question about manual valve bodies - 03/24/13 10:35 PM

When using a reverse pattern manual valve body in a 727, do you have to downshift every time you have to come to a stop or can you leave it in 3rd until you stop and then downshift back to 1st?

You can leave it in 3rd until you stop and then downshift to 1st. If the VB has LBA you'll want to do it that way anyway.

I do not have the LBA in my manual valve body. I always come to a complete stop before I downshift to first. I will downshift to second and just leave it there if I dont come to a complete stop. Ron

Excuse my ignorance but what is LBA and what is it's purpose?

LBA is Low Band Apply. It means you have the low/reverse band on in manual low. If your trans has it you will have eng braking in first gear but without it the eng freewheels in low and if you go back to low and get on and off the gas in low with no LBA you can damage the sprag (overrunning clutch). So, if I understand this correctly, it doesn't matter if you have LBA or not, either way you should stop before shifting back to first?

It doesn't matter if you have low band apply till you do something in first gear that you shouldn't and you damage the sprag, you'll know it's damaged next time you go to take off in low and the car doesn't move , hopefully you don't bring the RPM's up too high and the front drums comes thru the floor of the car ...

So what your saying is if you don't have LBA all you can do is accelerate normally, no hard acceleration or lighting up the tires?

No of course you can get into it in first without the LBA. But if you get on it on the street remember do not let off the gas while still in first. You do not want to lift and then get back on it. I do burnouts once in a blue moon On the street and I always make sure I shift into second before lifting. And at the track it works good as I nail it on launch and the pedal stays on the floor the full run thru all 3 gears. You just have to be smart and remember what you have. Valve Bodies without LBA were built mainley for racing only but many guys including me use them on the street. In theary the non low band apply will have a better shift to second as it does not have to be sure the band is released when it shifts to second. But many guys use the LBA and get the shift working great. Years ago no one made a LBA manual valve body. Ron

Is this going to be a race only deal where every .00000000000000000001 sec counts ? If not then just get a LBA valvebody .

I agree. Its best for your street car as you dont have to worry about hurting the sprag. Years back they did not have LBA manual valve bodies and thats why some street cars have them. The one in my boys Dart we bought in 1984. Ron
