Question about manual valve bodies - 03/24/13 10:35 PM
When using a reverse pattern manual valve body in a 727, do you have to downshift every time you have to come to a stop or can you leave it in 3rd until you stop and then downshift back to 1st?

You can leave it in 3rd until you stop and then downshift to 1st. If the VB has LBA you'll want to do it that way anyway.

That's how I've done it for years.

i ALMLOST always down shift.my car is over 4,000 lbs with me in it and manual brakes, the downshifting saves my poor old knee.street strip.

I do not have the LBA in my manual valve body. I always come to a complete stop before I downshift to first. I will downshift to second and just leave it there if I dont come to a complete stop. Ron

Excuse my ignorance but what is LBA and what is it's purpose?

LBA is Low Band Apply. It means you have the low/reverse band on in manual low. If your trans has it you will have eng braking in first gear but without it the eng freewheels in low and if you go back to low and get on and off the gas in low with no LBA you can damage the sprag (overrunning clutch). It doesn't matter if you have low band apply till you do something in first gear that you shouldn't and you damage the sprag, you'll know it's damaged next time you go to take off in low and the car doesn't move , hopefully you don't bring the RPM's up too high and the front drums comes thru the floor of the car ...

So what your saying is if you don't have LBA all you can do is accelerate normally, no hard acceleration or lighting up the tires?
