Orange or Turquoise Engine

Orange or Turquoise Engine - 03/21/13 05:45 PM

So I have to paint the engine for my '67 Satellite. Its a 440 and I'm going for a day 2 look with the car. What do you guys think?

The car is YY1 light tan poly, Cragar S/S all around, 28 inch tall bias ply on the front, J60s or L60s out back, chrome valve covers and air cleaner, cal custom wingnut, WHITE headers, Holley 850 DP, Edelbrock TM7 intake, Sun Super Tach on the dash, Sun blue line oil and temp gauges on the column when I find a set that work, 4 speed, vintage stickers in the trunk, possibly an SS scoop.

Should I go orange or turquoise? I personally think that the orange looks tougher but feel like it should be turquoise. The turquoise paint is hard to find in an ACCURATE color. And if it were day 2 this would have been a swapped deal with the 440 anyway, so what says the experts and guys who were around during day 2?

I simply voted Turquoise even though my engines have all been Orange...If you are undecided, then you have options. There aren't many people who paint their engines anything besides orange or black. Orange just happens to be my favorite color..thats all

Is it day 2 or YEAR 2 ? orange engines , except the hemi , didn't show till the 69 model year .

Re: Orange or Turquoise Engine - 03/21/13 06:12 PM

The Max-Wedge & HEMI were the only engines that were "Race HEMI Orange" thru 1968.
& I'm not sure any J60 or L60 tires were on the scene for a "day two" 1967 car.

Yeah that's more of the question I suppose John, but I'm going for more day 2, which would mean turquoise and why I can't make up my mind.

It really comes down to what you want to do , it's your car , you are the one that has to look at it whenever you open the hood.

but by all means let the board choose for you ...

Your choice is what works for you, Matt. As John knows, we pulled the Corp Blue 318 from my B5 '72 Satellite and replaced it with a Street Hemi Orange 440, topped off with a black ('70-71) dual snorkel air cleaner.

Looks good to me.

I was thinking about that while penning my reply and was going to use it . Your scenario is completely plausible because a day 2 440 swap would most likely be done with an engine from the orange engine era ...

I called TotallyAutoInc for the turquoise paint for my '67 Satellite and '65 Satellite engines, I am very happy with it. Even when I had to get another batch for touching up scratches, their color mix came out perfect.

I thought they were turquoise that year. But who cares make it what ever color you like best. Both turquoise and orange look good to me. Ron

I like to keep the engine colors like stock so I voted for the turquoise Most of the race motors I build for me are whatever color I have the most of in the shop, usually black. My 1969 dart GTS will have the proper color whne the original motor goes back into, now it is Street Hemi Orange Your car, your choice

Whatever color you decidde, make sure you paint your engine bay black for the correct look!

You could paint it red and tell everyone it's a Canadian car.

Mopar's rattle can turquoise is a pretty darn close match. After all, they came up with the original. Coverage is decent too. Much better than their orange.

Turquoise!
Orange engines in 68 and older Mopars just look weird to me.
And yes, the Mopar Performance spray bombs match the original turquoise very nicely. I matched it to several original engines I have and it's right on.

When is the last time you guys bought the Mopar stuff? Last time I bought it it looked very blue to me, almost like the corporate blue (it clearly wasn't, although it did have a blue cap).

I did a lot of research when I bought out my line of engine paints and the MP turquoise was way off. As was said too blue. There are no real close matches in a commercially available spray bomb. Just an FYI.

the dupli-color pontiac blue looks more correct than their turquoise. i know a guy that paints his mopar engines chevy orange because he likes the brighter hue

Okay, it has been 4-5 years since I've used the mopar turquoise. At least back then it was spot on and decidely different than the corporate blue. If its changed since then, then thats a drag.

Painted with duplicolor Alpine Green. Detroit Diesel color. Pretty good match.

Ironically, if I do go turquoise, the closest paint I have found is a shade of Alpine Green (Detroit Diesel Green) that a local parts store sells. It actually looks pretty close to me. It's a strange brand though I'll have to look at the can when I get home.
