does my 727 need to come out to fix this - 03/20/13 01:39 PM
In my 70 Cuda vert w/440 a problem developed last summer. With the console shifter in D the car won't move. Reverse works fine and I can manually shift it into first and second and it works fine-no slippage. I have checked the kickdown linkage and adjusted the band I can access without removing the pan. The trans was rebuilt about 8 years ago and has 2500 miles on since. It was done at a CARQUEST store that is long since out of business. When the car reaches 20mph, then drive works fine, but if I get below 20 its just like I threw it in neutral. I am guessing a governor or valve body problem, but don't have much auto trans experience. Thanks for any help.

Are you sure the shifter linkage is adjusted right? It sounds like a adjustment problem to me.

That might be a possibility. The console was installed in the car before I got it and may not be adjusted correctly. I will get under it this evening and adjust by the service manual. Thanks

If the linkage adjustment checks out I will install gauges for a pressure check. I'll have to check the SM for pressures.

Sounds like you broke the rear sprag, that trans will have to come out

Thanks for the help guys, although its not really what I wanted to hear. But better to get it done before summer gets here. TK

I would try adjusting the shifter first!

Hopefully...HOPEFULLY....your issue is what mine was....My shifter linkage was installed correctly and I was under the car and fixing it for two days and I still couldn't get it to run right. I went about modifying the shifter itself so the detente had more more room to correctly get into 1st gear. I could put it in D but I couldn't ever get into 1st.
Try loosening the screws on the console so the shifter plate has the ability to move back and forth. Unfortunately, thats how I drive but the console door puts pressure down to reduce the vibration when I do drive her....My only conclusion is that the console brackets were welded about 1/4" off from where the maximum shifting point should have been. She was born a column shift car.
Just a thought is all

I say the sprag is broke. Drop the pan and if it is broke, you will find pieces.
