does my 727 need to come out to fix this - 03/20/13 01:39 PM

In my 70 Cuda vert w/440 a problem developed last summer. With the console shifter in D the car won't move. Reverse works fine and I can manually shift it into first and second and it works fine-no slippage. I have checked the kickdown linkage and adjusted the band I can access without removing the pan. The trans was rebuilt about 8 years ago and has 2500 miles on since. It was done at a CARQUEST store that is long since out of business. When the car reaches 20mph, then drive works fine, but if I get below 20 its just like I threw it in neutral. I am guessing a governor or valve body problem, but don't have much auto trans experience. Thanks for any help.

Are you sure the shifter linkage is adjusted right? It sounds like a adjustment problem to me.

Valve body and governor are both accessible with the transmission in the car.
Fluid level and kickdown linkage adjustments are the first things to rule out.
The next easiest to check is the governor. Pressure checks will indicate if it is working properly.
All the rest of the problems that can cause it requires removal.
Good luck,
Craig

That might be a possibility. The console was installed in the car before I got it and may not be adjusted correctly. I will get under it this evening and adjust by the service manual. Thanks

If the linkage adjustment checks out I will install gauges for a pressure check. I'll have to check the SM for pressures.

Sounds like you broke the rear sprag, that trans will have to come out

The fact that it will move in manual 1st and then shift to 2nd and drive pretty much points to the overrunning clutch (sprag).

Number one cause of exploded 727's.

I would try adjusting the shifter first!

Hopefully...HOPEFULLY....your issue is what mine was....My shifter linkage was installed correctly and I was under the car and fixing it for two days and I still couldn't get it to run right. I went about modifying the shifter itself so the detente had more more room to correctly get into 1st gear. I could put it in D but I couldn't ever get into 1st.

Try loosening the screws on the console so the shifter plate has the ability to move back and forth. Unfortunately, thats how I drive but the console door puts pressure down to reduce the vibration when I do drive her....My only conclusion is that the console brackets were welded about 1/4" off from where the maximum shifting point should have been. She was born a column shift car.

Just a thought is all

I say the sprag is broke. Drop the pan and if it is broke, you will find pieces.

With the console shifter in D the car won't move. Reverse works fine and I can manually shift it into first and second and it works fine-no slippage.

With a fully-automatic valve body, placing the shifter in 2nd is functionally the same as placing it in D...the trans will take off in 1st and if it does the sprag isn't the problem.

Check the shift linkage from under the car in every gear.

That is right as it makes me see I jumped the gun as its easy to say.........car moves in manual low but not in D drive low which makes you instantly think the sprag (overrunning clutch) is bad as what I also figured without putting much thought in it. But what John says is right as the Mopar 727 when in second is the same as first on take off as it will still use the sprag and rear clutch and and take off in first and when it shifts to second and the kickdown band comes on and it just wont shift to third with the selector in second. I agree with John and would definetly check the linkage very close. Ron

I took that to mean when he manually shifted the trans into 1st it drove away and then he clicked 2nd, it shifted and likewise drive. He said that over 20 mph drive was OK.

For all the time it takes, by all means check the linkage but my money is on the sprag.

I may have misunderstood also but as was said take the time to check the linkage real good. Ron

The OP is ambiguous, "then" would be the key word.
