How long will a 904 last behind a 340? - 03/18/13 02:18 AM
I am putting a nice 340 in my blue car. Need that 904 to last a summer or two. I am not going racing just some street cruising. Just don't have the funds to put the 4speed setup in it. Think it should last?

My 904 has about 40 passes on it 5500 street miles and it is doing fine. I did have it opened up and checked about 500 miled ago and it looked great inside.

We used a 999 behind a warmed up 360. It worked very well. In fact, for most small blocks, I prefer building a 904 style tranny.

How about 10 years of racing an 11 second car. Just check the second gear band adjustment after a few miles, then just drive it.

It has about 80k on it. Ran good with the 318. Hope it will last.

Years ago I swapped in a 340 into a 318 challenger and drove it for like 4 years until the car got so rusty is was not safe anymore. Then I parted the car back around 1985.
I also ran nitrous on that 340 too and the 904 did great and would bark the tires during shifts. Still have the trans with a shift kit in it, it never gave up.

The 904 behind my warm 360 in the '68 does fine. It was in a street class drag car before I put it in the Dart and that was 11 years ago. Has a van first gear. I wouldn't worry about it lasting, as long as it has no issues now.
