Replacing 1990 318 with a 1968 318 in a D150 worth it? - 03/09/13 05:04 AM

I have a 1990 D150 318. The plan is to install a mild cam and converter. But the truck has a loud rattle which sounds like a lifter noise. I pulled off the intake and noticed that the lifters are roller which are pricy plus this means I will have a fortune in the cam also and I'm on a budget. I have another 318 from a 1968 barracuda I was pondering over putting in the D150 and was wondering if this would be an easy swap or if anybody has ever done anything like this? And if the whole tbi system would work out on top of the 1968 originally carburated 318? Any info or advice at all with this swap would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

How do you plan on getting around the factory TBI/electronics to run the early 318? Id fix the 90 TBI and dont worry about a cam/ect..

That's what I was wondering. I was gonna use try the the 1990 tbi intake and carb on the 1968 318. But I was making sure this would work ok or if anyone else tried this and ran into issues.

They will work with just swapping parts but why install an engine that the exhaust seats are not really compatible with today's gas & the valves will sink in Besides, why go flat tappet when you already have roller

look at the local cl i just sold a magnum 318 complete soup to nut...intake front serp setup harness starter for 250 bucks and was glad to be rid of it.

in a pinch your earlier engine will work just fine with transfer of parts from the later engine...youll be into it for some gaskets and incidentals, if moneys a big issue, your own labor doesnt cost you much so id think your better off having a running truck than one that doesnt

I pulled these lifters are and I noticed on the top of one of the lifters you can push down on it and it feels kind of soft. Would it be safe just to replace one without replacing all of them?

Bullet cams will regrind your stock roller cam for less than $150.

Roller cams aren't sensitive to roller and cam lobe match. As long as the cam is in decent shape, its fine to replace a single lifter.

A 60s or early 70s 318 won't last long as a daily driver on today's gasoline before you have valve and seat problems. Been there, done that... In the 90s.

Did you actually price the lifters? I was thinking that they aren't that expensive. Seems I replaced a few of mine years ago and don't remember them costing that much.

10.99 a piece. just picked up 2 from autozone. one felt a little soft. not sure if that means anything and one fell in the dirt.

Gonna have to make motor mounts for this, the 91 dak 318 is the only LA 318 with the bolt holes in the side to bolt up to dak motor mounts, it is a 1 year 1 application engine. Even van and ram 91 318s did not have the bolt hole for the motor mounts.

What do you do for crank sensors and such with an old shortblock?

Sheldon, I bought a 94 model down in the Arkansas land where they wear no shoes
It had a 340 with Mag top end & the crank sensor urethaned to the rubber dust boot & it was urethaned to the bellhousing

No crank sensor till 92 on the 318 and 93 on the 360 wneh they went to magnums. The TBI motors used the distributer for base timing still even though the computer actually controlled the curve.

On the 340 magnum truck the real question is how they bolted the engine in
