Dual Quad Air Cleaner Assembly Ever Made For 440?

Dual Quad Air Cleaner Assembly Ever Made For 440? - 03/06/13 05:08 PM

(edit....For a stock appearance)

Making a base plate is probably what I'll end up doing, but I was wondering if Chrysler or another company ever made an air cleaner base & lid for a dual quad set up? I have an aluminum Offenhauser intake for the 440 I want to use, but would like to have just one larger air cleaner base & lid instead of two smaller ones. I always liked the chrome Hemi one & thought I'd like to duplicate that somehow.

Does anyone remember if something like this existed, even back in the late 60's or 70's?

The difficulty is going to be on the distance between the two carbs. Even the Street Hemi and 413 inline manifolds had different spacing. If you get lucky and the spacing is that same on your manifold and the hemi you'll be good to go OR you could get the hemi air cleaner and modify the base by moving one opening.

1962 383 RB had dual quads from factory, dont remember what type air cleaner they had might be worth a look

No factory dual quad 440s, there s a member (Steve paint it black?) that makes custom fiberglass baseplates similar to the '69-'71 oval fresh air-air clewaners. web page - Hybrid Fiberglass Solutions.

I bought mine off Steve (PaintItBlack) as already mentioned...the problem was the spacing...Nothing too troublesome. I cut out the center openings and reset them to where I needed to be in the engine bay between my wiper motor and my MSD ignition...Little 'glass work and it looks fantastic...Before and after shots below

Thanks for the replies.

Looks like it's what I had thought, nothing available except for the older, expensive ones that probably won't fit anyway.

That's pretty cool & looks like what I'll be leaning towards so I'll have to contact him, thanks. And I just bookmarked his page, too.

Yep, pricey. No worse than air grabber parts, though.

Those are teh same air cleaners used on some years of 300s and also 57-58 Fury. There was a guy reproducing them but when I bought my set in '07-08 he was getting near the end of his stockpile.

The baseplates for these fit the 4 1/2" AFBs (the old OEM ones) and don't fit any 68-newer or the Eddy carbs. The short filters used with them are not available but I've found a brand-X one that can be formed into shape. Either way, the filter is only about 2" tall. They breathe thru about a 3/16" gap around the bottom edge of hte air cleaner. ()

Edit - added a crappy photo that shows the baseplate. That's the top of hte baseplate, what you'd see when taking the lid off. It's wierd compared to 'normal' air cleaners.

There's a few air filters left !

Pete did you transfer those measurement to steve so he can make one that fits ?

Did that start life as a hemi replacement or was it for the stage5 hemi intake ? What lid did you use ? And what the standoffs on the carbs ?

Started off life as a Stage V as it sat in the white. I removed both openings with a Dremel and a carbide saw blade. Relocated them to where the air cleaner could sit comfortably in front of my 3spd wiper motor (about 3/4") and slightly inside of my MSD distributor because it was so tall (about 1/2") Centered it on the carb's but I also needed it to drop down a little further because I have insulation on the inside of my hood.

I used the Stage V lid as well. It was going to be hard to relocate those bevels so the easier thing to do was dog-leg the mounting studs on the carb's and weld them on like that. Put a nut on the bottom section to jamb it up against stud opening.

When you say the standoff's on the carbs..what do you mean? I gave Steve all my measurements so he can have them on hand so he can create a more professional looking model. You can't see any of my work once the filter and lid are on. It didn't take long to make it, from when I received the assembly, to mapping out the correct position, cutting, duct taping it into place and then laying down the 'glass over the voids.....3 weeks...not bad for someone who doesn't work with it on a daily basis.

In a couple of pictures it looks like you have some spacer rings on the carbs ? where those just for your mock up purposes ?

What is the stud to stud spacing between the 2 carbs ? I'd like to compare it to a stock Hemi intake , I have both a stock Hemi and Stage V .

The spacers came with the Route 66 K&N tear drop assembly I had originally purchased and while I do love that look, My hood clearances wont allow for me to install them without a cowl hood induction (its on my mind and in the works) For now I sent out one of those 2" collars and had them milled in 1/4" intervals and placed 2 on each carb so as to allow clearance for the linkages on my edelbrocks.

The distance center to center on my carbs is 6 7/16". The distance from the front of the air cleaner to the center stud on the front carb is 7 3/4", and the distance from the rear of the air cleaner to the stud of the rear carb 7 3/8".

Hope the numbers help you out

Awe, those carters look so cute! Just joshin, looks like a pretty clean setup once you cover up that wiring some. Tim

Re: Dual Quad Air Cleaner Assembly Ever Made For 440? - 03/09/13 01:29 PM

I dunno...I like my Carters....I like to get in my car and GO!...I dont want to sit there and wonder why my engine is running rich because the power valve on my holley decided to let go because of a backfire. I been there...New Holley....left me in a parking lot...Will never go back to that setup. Only time I touch my carb's are to change the metering rods, and jets to acclimate to warmer weather or colder weather. One and done.

I agree on the wiring though....gotta clean that up...hide as much as you can
