BEST COUPLER FOR GTX??? - 03/02/13 05:06 AM

I am switching from factory power steering..to factory manual gear box. What would be the best coupler to use for this modification? I definately want to eliminate the factory "rag joint"! Thanks for the suggestions in advance! Randy B.

id call borgeson see if they make an adaptor, but the ps shaft is shorter so you will prob need to find a ms shaft and then modify it to a borgeson joint...I dont know of a way to eliminate the coupler and go to a better unit without making that shaft longer...

The steering shaft will be to short with the swap to a manual box. I used borgenson a splined /smooth coupler, 3/4" rod and a splined /smooth steering u-joint.

slide the coupler on the box the u joint on the steering shaft and cut the shaft to lenght. weld them uo and you are done sir.

What are the negatives when replacing the factory "pot" type connector with a universal joint?

I don't believe there's any problem other than if you installed it solid that won't allow any in and out movement of column to box. It's got to allow some "slip", like the above image that has the missing set screw maybe.

Yeah, I thought that there must be some way to provide a bit of "give". That's why driveshafts have slip yokes and universals. I might be a bit concerned with the set screw missing though.

The drive shaft has a slip yoke because it needs to move rearward as the suspension drops.

A steering column does not have the problem but it needs to slip a little during installation and a tiny bit with chassis flex.
Cars with rubber isolated K frames or body on frame assemblies need slip in the steering shaft to allow for body flex.

I could be wrong but I seem to remember that the shaft will slide out enough to connect to the manual box. The collapsible shaft has a nylon pin that shears during a crash. You can snap it off and pull the shaft outward.

Thanks for your help, guys! I will be playing around with the steering some time this week. Gotta get the X back on the road this season...after sitting out 2012,due to lack of funds to purchase needed trim pieces, and various NEW parts. Randy B.

Not sure of the year, but the coupler in some of the older vans should do the trick.

Randy on my 63 I bought this adapter from Mancini as I think it was a Flaming River piece. I used my stock joint over as it was in great shape. This setup has worked fine for me.
And you car looks great Ron
