Re: what do u guys think - 02/19/13 04:27 AM

Well my old 446 was a .030 over 440 with 906 heads and the MP .557 cam. It use a Holley Street Dominator intake and a 850 DP and was 10.0 comp. Ran fine on pump gas as I used the KB quench pad pistons to get quench. It also used 1-3/4 headers. I never dynoed it but it ran a best of 11.49 @ 116 in my 3700 lb 63. I would guess it was about 500 flywheel hp. Ron

started clearancing the crank tonight

Re: what do u guys think - 02/21/13 06:32 AM

with the mp528 cam and those heads, I would say right around 500hp.

Re: what do u guys think - 02/21/13 07:43 AM

U using a forged or cast crank? I built my 451 w a cast and clearancing needed was minimal, just a little grinding on the block. I didnt have the crank cut down and it was minimal work to balance with 440source Hbeams and Ross pistons.

No reason to wing it, I wrote an entire book on building stroker big block Mopar engines. $20 at Amazon or Mancini Racing.

Re: 451 build - 02/22/13 01:38 AM

i am using a steel crank, and i am using the shorter 400 rod so i had to do some clearancing on the crank with the piston that i am using.

I just did a 400 block with KB quench dome pistons,Eddie heads and a

Racer Brown SSH-44. Haven't put it in yet but I know of a few others

with this combination and it works good.

So, how many inches of vacume did you flow those heads at?

Re: 451 build - 02/22/13 11:48 PM

Generally speaking, if anyone is quoting head flow it's at 28", as anything less would look low.

260 peak flow from a set of stock ported B heads is a pretty nice job, but not max porting. Of course, when one compares that with the 250cfm STOCK peak flow from a 5.7Hemi head, it starts to look a little weak.

True. But if you're starting with a big block wedge powered truck it's probably less time & money to build a budget built, low reciprocating mass, 451 than a 3rd Gen Hemi. Or even if it's a smallblock now, the brackets, trans, etc are still cheaper.

Not trying to start sumthin', just sayin,!

Re: 451 build - 02/23/13 05:00 PM

truck already has a 440 in it,just wanting too try building a 451,i think it would/should be more FUN,the 440 is healthy, but i think the 451 should b more healthy.money is a restraint,so taking baby steps, little at a time, just upgrading a little.i have been accumulating parts for this build for a couple years, got the pistons rods and crank and block and heads, hopefully i'll find some more parts at the indy swap meet in march,oh yeah!

hey 451boy
whats your book called? I have built a few of these and might be building another but want to do it a little different from the last few, always looking for ideas.

Low deck strokers are a great motor & yours should make some power,
but in a 4x4, low end torque is a must, especially if you have big off road tires. Ask me how I know! I sold the 451 torque monster I built for my Barracuda & installed a 70 383 mag with a little smaller cam than yours (power band was 2500-6500), stock 906's, and with the
35x12.5x16.5 BFG's on my 71 Power Wagon (3.55's), street manners sucked! Low vacuum, lotta gas to get it rollin. Wasn't much fun. I just installed a small Comp cam & new 906's and its a different truck.
If you've got 4:10's or lower & a stick, it might be more street friendly. Just my 2 cents. Your build should make 500 if the heads don't hold it back a little & should have mid 500's torque, too.
Best of luck with your build.

Here is that book being mentioned.
http://www.amazon.com/Build-Max-performa...dy+finkelbeiner

I own a copy and have found it very useful. It should belong to any good library devoted to Mopar literature.

Thanks
it is because of Andy (451boy) that started building low deck strokers, since then did a small block and even a modern Hemi
