Cracked Intake

I have an edelbrock DP4B intake that I just got and it has cracks on the underside right at the exhaust crossover ports. Is this common? Is the intake still useable like this?

yes it is useable , are you blocking the crossover off ? if not you want to have it welded . I welded a CH4B , had to chase the crack because the passage was eaten from the inside out from the exhaust running thru it for a few decades.

If you are blocking the crossover then don't worry about it .

How do I block the crossover? Does that have much effect on driveability?

get the felpro HP vally pan gasket set for the B-engine,it will have 4 paper gaskets/vally pan with heat blocked off.

it is a felpro HP1215 for the RB 440 engine.

If you live somewhere that has an actual winter and you drive the car in the winter then you want a functioning exhaust crossover.

If you daily drive the car its nice to have the crossover working. if it's just for a weekend warrior, then block it off. Of course if you have aftermarket heads you don't have provisions for the crossover anyway.

OK I guess my question now is how bad would it be for me to just drive it as-is? I live in Chicago and the car is driven several times a week ... I don't want to put much money into it and am worried if I take it to someone to get welded they'll just end up warping it...

If the PN is correct for an RB-engine you'll be getting the wrong intake gasket for your 383.

Are you sure that the cracks that you see are not just surface cracks. Have seen that many times on aluminum. You can drive it as is and it will not effect the drivability even if they are crack cracks. You may hear a very slight exhaust leak or you may not as the main exhaust pressure is out the manifolds to the back.

Yeah, you need this one Fel Pro 1214 Intake Manifold Gaskets. Summit is Z1214. Jegs is 24.99 and Summit is 27.99. Rock auto was just under $22.

correct. I did not have the B-engine part# at the time. the main thing is the HP in the part# to get the heat blocked off.

I would block it and use elect. choke on the carb.

Welding it is NOT going to warp it , you have to seal the crack or you are going to have an exhaust leak and if you have to pass some sort of safety inspection you will fail it more than likely .

If it's going on a daily driver that does not have either a manual or electric choke you need the crossover open , but since the DP4B does not have a provision for the thermostatic choke having the crossover open will help with warm up ...

I'm not subject to any inspections/ testing and I'm already using a manual choke so..., guess I'll just block it off. How much worse do you think it would be driveability wise in the winter with the crossover blocked? Thanks for the info guys

get it hot tanked at a machine shop and then welded at a reputable place. take it to somebuddy who welds a lot and knows what they are doin'

fix it right the first time or you will be pulling it back off again

I wouldn't winter drive without the crossover but that's just me. The crossover heat helps with mpg and throttle response by boiling off fuel that's puddled on the floor of the intake or dropped out of suspension. This happens more when the air is colder. But you can try blocking it off and you will see the difference for yourself.
