Where to install speakers in conv. challenger

Where to install speakers in conv. challenger - 02/11/13 09:50 PM

I'm looking to install a stereo system in my 70 Convertible but am having a hard time locating where speakers can go. I would like to install 2 up front and 2 in back with a small sub. Any advice?
Thanks

If you are not too picky, you can grab a cheap set of convertible rear panels that someone has aready butchered up with speaker holes and go to town on them. They come up for sale every now and then, some people give them away.

If you are really energetic you can use your factory panels for a fibreglass mold and create your own custom panel.

Same principle applies to door panels or kick panels.

As for a sub, pretty much anything will work in the trunk. You could throw the spare tire out and use it's hold-down to keep the sub in place.

A suggestion for the head unit to keep it stock appearing, contact a positive contributor to this board and all around good guy, "BigMoneyLewis" on here to set you up with something:

That's a great site "BigMoneyLewis" .
I'm thinking of hiding the head unit in glove box or behind the original radio. Not looking to cut any panels if at all possible.
How about making a box in the trunk and attach 2 speakers and a sub.
Will the sound go throught the back seat?

Do you have any experience doing this or site suggestions? TIA.

You could try putting either a DVC (dual coil) or 2 x3.5" speakers in the original 4x10 centre dash location. My take on the feedback is the 2 3.5" are a better option, but I've actually seen very little feedback on this setup in an E-body. The space to the metal dash frame is very limited.
Could try one/two of those under-seat subs from Custom Autosound or similar http://www.classiccarstereos.com/product/Undercovers-Speakers/UNDERCOVER-1.html

No, actually I don't.

I have an article somewhere in one of my car magazines that outlined the whole procedure and it's more simple and straight-forward than I thought. There's a releasing agent that you brush on your original panel so that the mould can be popped off your panel. That was my biggest concern was boogering up your original stuff.

The results are as good as the effort put into it, and you can get as creative as you want. I have a peeve with fibreglass though and that's that it's filthy stuff to work with. Seems to take a week to get it out of your skin no matter how well you dress up. That tells me it can't be good for a human being so I stay away from it. Some folks, doesn't bother them.

The guy that built my system has the ones mentioned above that are underneath the front bucket seats.

I have the indoor outdoor speakers and sit them on the floor pointing up...great sound and bass...no cutting of door panels

I have a RR Convert that I was considering having the speaker mounted in the front of the back seat, and have an upholsterer sew in some sort of vented material in the area where your heels would be.

I mounted the sub to the V shaped frame behind the back seat of my Cuda. I had room to spare. I had to bend the spare tire mounting rod in order to move the spare toward the rear about 3 inches to make room for it. I bolted two Alpine shallow mount 4 ohm, 4 inch speakers together and installed them in the dash with heavy duty velcro from Home Depot. I paired those with two more 4 ohm 5 1/4 inch shallow mount speakers in the kick panels. I don't think that you can mount regular voice coil speakers in the trunk and expect to hear them very well. I'm not sure where you can mount the rears in a convertible.
Here is a link to the sub:

Thanks guys
looks like installing speakers in kickpanel and under seats are the best option. Just need to find some good boxed speakers to mount under the seats.
