Help me pick my rear tires - 02/11/13 01:31 AM

I need help deciding what will look best for my 69 Bee.It currently rides on 15x10 weld pro stars with 295-65-15 drag radials.I like the way this looks. But i'm having a hard time finding a street tire that is close. What do you guys run?The new rims are wheel vintiques steelies 15x10 with 5.5 offset, this is the same as the welds The cars has +1 springs with the offset rubbing should not be an issue.Pictures of some combos would be great. How about the front also it has 15x6 thought 225-70-15s would look good. Here is what it looks like with the welds and bfgs.Want to get it right the first time thanks guys

In that size I don't think anyone makes a true rock hard street radial. Just drag radials. I think the closest thing would be the mickey thompson sportsman sr radials, they are available in a variety of sizes. BFG sells their gforce drag radials in 325/50/15 which on a 10" rim is about 28" diameter and 13.25" width from sidewall to sidewall.

What about BFG Radial T/A 295/50/15? Same width but you may not like the slightly shorter tire. Hoosier makes some radial tires that have the height and width. On my 70 it has BFG 275/60/15 and they hold up real well.

How much shorter? I think I would rather go slightly skinnier and keep the height.I think my options are few.Was hoping someone had a pic of a combo that looked good.

Is it ok to post pics of other members cars?If not please delete this picture. This is the look I'm after but don't know who's car this is

These are 275-60-17's on 5.5 b/s wheels. There is no more room. Mastercraft has a newer line out than the Avengers. Sadly these have been discontinued. These measure 11" at the sidewall and almost a full 30" tall. (29.98 spec) You do have to slide the rear back unless you want to trim the front of the 1/4 panel.

I think I'm going to have to go 275-60-15 that looks good on your car.Coker has a 285-70-15 in a bfg but they want $250 a tire.I,m trying to go away from a drag radial, but keep the look I,m planning on 10 to 15 thousand miles a year if I can swing it.Just not much available in these sizes.
I bought the +1 espo springs right now without everything in the car the tops of the quarters sit way above the tops of the tires just don't want it to look stupid, and waste money.

I just remembered I also had to use a set of 1 1/2" lowering blocks to get the ride height back down. My car has super-stock springs on it because I knew it would have alot of weight due to the amps and subs being mounted in the trunk. Everything was about an extra 150# and looked fine with regular sized tires on it. When I put these on it looked like it had air shocks all the way up. The 1 1/2 blocks worked great, but you shouldn't need them staying with a 15" wheel.

How many miles can you expect to get out of a set of drag radials with regular street use w/o burnouts roughly?

Dont know but I have been driving on these Hoosier 30 x 9 radial slicks on the street for over 2 years and a few trips to the race track. I would say I have at least 2000 to 3000 miles on them and about 10 passes down the 1/4. They actually handle very good since I have radials up front. No one makes a drag radial in the 30 x 9 size so I just started driving on these slicks and was surprised how well they hold up on the street. Ron

Re: Help me pick my rear tires - 02/15/13 05:28 PM

I was looking for a replacment set of tires to replace the 305/60R15 BFG''s radial T/A tires on my 70' barracuda and was turned onto Cooper Cobras radial tires. They ride nicer than the BFG's, don't have the fail rate as those ones, had 295/60R15 sizes a avalible, look good and a pair of them were cheaper by $60 on the pair! I have under 5k miles on a set and don't show any signs of wear yet. Very happy I decided to go with these tires.

Cant go wrong with a classic size like a 275/60/15. I have Mickey Thompson Indy Profile bias on my car. look super era correct with a killer stance

Look into the nitto DR, lot of guys getting 10k + out of them. Mine will probably go at least that. Many say they don't hook as well as other DR but they are WAY better than street tires.

Re: Help me pick my rear tires - 02/16/13 12:36 AM

I can't help as I just have measely 255/60-15's on a set of 8.5" rims......I guess this is what NOT to do if I were you as they wouldn't have that big, bad @$$, big rear tire look, especially on a Bee with all of that room in those wheel wells

Don't get T/As... they're such an old-tech tire. Sure they look kind of cool but that's about all they have going for them.

Same tech as any 60-series tire out there.....unless you go to a 55-series or less your're not going to see anything that out-techs a basic radial design. Tread pattern, now that's a different tech all together. Then if you want to talk about how a tire is manufactured then you'll have to start looking at Michelin and some other Euro and Pacific Rim manufactures......but not going on my old American Muscle at this point. Only choices are from Goodyear or Firestone IMO and then you need to read the sidewall to see where they are made

So what is out there with leaps and bounds better tech in a 60-series radial tire?

Hello 68SAT, can you show us a picture of your entire car with those MT's on it? It looks very nice and that might be the tire I have been looking for. Thanks and take care, B.C..
