how in the heck do you put these together ? - 02/10/13 12:39 AM

what's the trick to putting the steering coupler together ? i thought i finally got it together, installed my column, then it came apart again. had to remove the column to put it back together. after many attempts , i finally ended up ripping the rubber boot , now i have to buy another kit just to get a new boot. i thought at one time i saw a different type of kit to replace this design. any advise ??

I usually just clamp with pliers on the opposite end, there are also spring clamps available to hold it om.

i seem to remember a larger rubber boot that pulled down over the lower coupler and did not need the metal clamp.

I was able to use a pair of good sized channel lock pliers to bend the tabs over the body, worked pretty good too.

I use pliers on the upper clamp before ever trying to actually attach it to the coupler body... With proper tweaking you can get all six fingers of the cover to snap on tightly, then you put the clamp on the shaft, build the coupler & snap the clamp on, never trying to tighten it any further.. Cause every time I've tried to tighten it the damn thing winds up popping off.... So play with it off the car then leave it alone..

Those boots are $28 each. What a rape!
I bought two because I am a glutton for punishment.

Throw that Coupler/Pot in the scrap pile. Install a U joint there.

No, no U-joint. The coupling has to allow for some in and out movement of the shaft as the unibody flexes. The Chrysler design does that. As for how to attach the cover...Use clamps to pull the cover down tight. Then using a cold chisel, bend the tabs around the coupler body. When all tabs are bent around protrusions go around with chisel and firmly whack at the protrusions. This will leave a slight indentation on the tab. Using this method for years. Covers never come off, and grease doesn't ooze out either.

The use of a couple of small C-clamps is the trick (for me at least).

The clamps I have found to work best for me are wooden wood working clamps. They put even pressure along both sides not distorting the retainer. Check with a friend or neighbor that does wood working. He will very probably have at least a pair of them.

drill a 1/8 inch hole just below the top , on the flat side of the shoe. insert 1/8" roll pin in hole to keep the shoe from comming all the way out when you pull on the shaft.
just one side will work, don't have to do both sides.
