Hey gang..
Finally resolved the MSD-6A non-firing issue I had on my buddy's '71 v-code 440 Challenger R/T. We'd like to get his factory tach to work as well and I see there are numerous adaptors for this that MSD sells. I'd like to get suggestions and ideas from you E-body owners who have already gone down this road. I have the box mounted under the battery tray and if I'm not mistaken, there's a "tach" port on the side. Right now the OEM tach lead isn't attached to the - side of the coil, didn't want it to mess around with the electrical system when we 1st fire it up.

Any suggestions on working configurations you all may have?

I'd go ahead & wire it there. It'd be closer to the tack in the dash (easier to wire) & would function the same as the MSD port. On the prior fix you mentioned the brown wire was grounding the coil IF I read that right. I'd think the brown wire (ign2) circuit would dead end at the ign sw when not energized & certainly not be grounded at any time but no biggie,you're up & running so enjoy

I doubt the tach will work off the coil.The MSD is multi spark.Thats why there is a plug on the Box.Most factory tachs wont work with the box without the adaptor.Rocky

As far as the tach goes, is the tach, factory?...current or voltage triggered?(most factory tachs are voltage triggered) what are you using to trigger the MSD, the white wire, or green and violet wires (magnetic pick up)? as there are several ways of wiring/adapting the tach for usage

Hey Mike,
The distributor has the harness that came with it and the kit (green and violet). We would like to get the factory tach to work, but I believe he's planning on putting in an aftermarket one as well, a SunPro or something like that.

The motor is done.. Man, she fired right up !!

Did the high rpm/low rpm cycle 4 times each in 3 different cycles with 5 minute cool down prior.. Runs great !!!! It is a good day....

dont hook the tach to the coil unless you want to fry the board if its original, if its an updated tach boeard it prob will work with the msd wave, there is 2 adapters for the tach whether you trigger with a mag pickup or the white wire.

Hey Mike,

if it's a factory tach or voltage triggered aftermarket and your using the green and violet wires, then you need the MSD tach adapter pn#8920, if the aftermarket tach you plan on using is a current triggered model, then you can still use the MSD tach adapter PN 8920...
