2006 Ram 1500 Fuel Pump Replacement - Advice needed

I need to replace the fuel pump in my 2006 Ram (5.7L). I have the part, which includes the pump/sending unit ass'y.

I know it requires lowering the tank and removing the old unit from the top of the tank. Having not done this specific job before, are there any specific pitfalls I need to look out for during the job?

My tank is almost completely empty, so that is a plus. Thanks for any help.

I would say be careful when disconnecting fuel lines as well as electrical connections and EVAP lines coming from the tank, you don't want any of those to break (duh!) It will help to lower the tank some and then disconnect the filler tube from the tank. Usually they are a rubber hose with clamp on them.

I assume it's the same as the 2005. I did mine about a year ago. It wasn't fun.

You will need to understand how to remove the hardlines - both from the vents and the sender. The connection is made with a plastic C-shaped clip that inserts into the female portion of the connector.

To remove the tubes, you have to push DOWN on the top portion with your thumb. This spreads the the feet apart and disengages the lock. So, while pushing down, pull the tube back off the nipple.

If your truck is anything like mine, the fuel pump retainer lock ring and seat was horribly, and I mean incredibly rusty. I had to do a lot of R&R on it, and it was close to needing a new tank it was so bad. I was surprised.

Don't be surprised if your old pump is destroyed in this manner. This was not a result of me working on it, it came apart like this.

make sure you disconnect the battery before doing the work. Don't reconnect it until you are all buttoned back up.


After:

I like to pull the driveshaft out of the way also as it gives you more working room and when I did them on a lift it was one less thing to hit my head on.
Some of the techs would actually pull the bed and do it from the top. And that bed is not as light as we thought. Good luck , Ron

Drop the tank,easier than pulling the box,get a new lock ring&done.

I agree with 383man pulling the drive shaft makes it a lot easier.
