K & N air filters

K & N air filters - 01/31/13 05:43 AM

Thinking about trying one on my 493. I like the idea of pulling air through the lid. They look kind of cool, too.

Who has tried them? Good? bad?

Do some research on the internet then decide for yourself. I've read a few articles of engines that had used oil analysis done on them getting a lot more crap in the oil that gets past those k&n and similar type filters. I stick with the good old paper jobbers but to each his own.

I've been using them for 30 plus year. No worries here. BUT I don't live in a very dusty
climate.

I,ve never worn out an engine due to cylinder/bearing wear.

I've never used the lid you're talking about but the filters in my opinion are excellent, easy to clean and a bargain.

I have run K&N on all of of mine for 21 years. Here is what I have found out on each car. Daily driver72 Dart 318 with 8" Volicity Stack in Mini Mopar hood scoop: Great water repelant from oil.Daily driver and NMRO Stock class 79 RC with 440-6: Kept mud and water out even though it was open housing. 07 Nitro has 130,000 and cleaned once. 07 HD Wide Glide: Freaking mess, oil everywhere in TB, even after letting it sit for "excess" to drain.01 Kawi Nomad EFI filter Failed: tear engine down to remove pieces from cylinders.75 D 100 440 with STP 305A size filter: Oil did not stay in filterand had to reapply every 2000 miles, screwed with FAST EX EFI, pulled and tossed. There are other brands that may be better without the oil mess. I prefer them due to the amout of water mine see.

i have the filter and top on 2 of my cars, i cant say if it made a difference as they never had anything else on them. i can say i put a K&N replacement filter in my 03 dakota w/3.9 and gained 1 MPG. i confirmed it many time before and after putting the filter in.

I've never had anything else on mine to compare. Never even did a back to back without the filter

But it's good for low 10's

As mentioned the lid might be a good idea if you are not getting enough air thru the element, however its a proven fact that the oil bath filters do not filter or perform better than the CORRECT size paper. I have run K&N's before but I find them a PAIN to clean and re-oil. Old paper in the trash new paper in...done.

What's the best brand(s) of paper element to ask for?

??? I typically use the NAPA brand I think they are made by WIX. I will add I do not use a lid at the ttrack, just the base plate and filter.
