Oil pump/distributor drive gear not lining up.

Oil pump/distributor drive gear not lining up. - 01/28/13 03:42 AM

Big block at TDC #1. Installing the oil pump/distributor drive and the slot will not line up with the cam centerline. TDC verified with degree wheel. I'm guessing that the installation of the cam is causing this, since I installed it slightly advanced per the cam card. To install the drive with the slot perfectly aligned would require exactly 1/2 of a tooth on the drive. I'm sure other have run in to this...

It's not gonna line up exactly parallel with the cam stick. It'll be a little off to the passenger side of the block.

Is it the front or the back of the slot that is to the passenger side?

Thanks

I'd set the harmonic dampener at your desired initial IE 15 BTDC #1 compression then move the dist housing till the magnet is dead even with the tooth then a C hair CW from the tooth with the vac can located in it's general correct location and clock the inter gear ANYWHERE it needs to be to locate the rotor under the #1 cap terminal. I would locate the #1 wire in the OE cap terminal location as it lets the wires nestle as neatly as possible with the shortest length and the standardization helps prevent future mistakes. As you know if you left the timing gears dot to dot at 6 & 12 o'clock then #6 cyl is firing & you'd locate the rotor under #6 cap terminal instead of under the #1 cap terminal. Depending on how close to dead on the rotor is to the cap terminal note that vac adv will shift it CW (BB) & an 8 degree can will shift it 8 (dist) degrees) from the at rest (no vac) position. Some dizzys have vastly different from stock top rotor to bottom tang phasing which throws the parallel OE deal out the window. The intergear slot is hidden & can be clocked anywhere to get the up top visible wires located correct if you desire & I would recommend it.

So if this is the case could you not line up the BDC mark and then use the #1 terminal?

If both marks were at 12 oclock, you can line up #1 to fire.

If you left the timing gear dots at 6/12 0'clock with timing slit at TDC on the timing tab you could turn the dampener 1 turn till the slit is back at TDC & at that point #1 is on compression/firing & internally as Buildanother said the timing gears would now be at 12 & 12 0'clock. then at that point you can still clock the rotor via the intergear shaft anywhere & going with the OE location is I believe a good move & start routing wires CCW from that #1 position & with that set I would definitely check phasing by backing up the timing slit a bit to your desired initial so you can set the dist magnet/reluctor position then check rotor phasing

The easy way is to remove the number one spark plug and with your finger over the hold slowly turn the engine over till you feel compression coming up then very slowly bring the piston to TDC. NOW install the intermediate gear with the slot as close to parallel as you can get it. Install the distributor and take not of where the rotor is pointing and install the distributor cam and install the plug wires starting with number one where the rotor is point ind then follow the firing order counter clockwise around the cap. Crankshaft and cam positions will take care of themselves.
