Fire extinguishers in your car?

Fire extinguishers in your car? - 01/25/13 05:48 PM

Who runs a fire extinguisher in their car?

Where do you mount them? What brand/type? Thanks.

I prefer Halon Extinguishers,....I usually don't mount it, but I'm sure to take it with me regardless of the destination, if the car is running, it's onboard, daily driver or toy, only a fool runs without one in their vehicle

I use the halon ones in my cars as well. I have had to use mine twice on other peoples cars.

I have a halon mounted on the gas filler tube in the trunk of my 70' Charger. How long are these good for? Now that I think about it. It has been mounted there over 23 years & the guage still shows that it is in the green or still good.

Halon is imposible to get now. Has anyone tried the Halotron substitute? Pricey but it seems like the way to go now. Halotron videos

My A's have the false seat belt latches under the front edge of the seat. I buckle the belt onto the false latch, then snug the belt down on the seat with a hardware variety (ABC type) extinguisher caught beneath the belt. Beware that the powdered type extinguishers can settle. They need to be rapped hard on something or on the ground to loosen the powder inside just before they are used. I've also put out an engine fire I passed by with a blanket (late 80's ish 5.0 T-bird), fellas whole ignition system, plug wires and distributor were burning. Never understood that one.

I have mine under my drivers seat in my 63. It is a great idea to have one as it would be a bad feeling to have your car catch on fire and you are helpless with no ext. All in all a great idea to have one in your muscle car. Ron

That is a super-common fire in that era Ford.

There is a metal fuel line that runs up to within a few inches of the screw-in fuel filter at the carb inlet. The distance between the end of the metal line and the fuel filter is taken up with a very short length of rubber fuel line. The rubber length fails because it never gets replaced, or gets replaced but the metal line not realigned (which leaves stress on the rubber line so it fails prematurely). All of this is immediately adjacent to the distributor cap which just so happens to have a bunch of high voltage sparks jumping around inside. The spark plug wires and cap are the first and most dramatic items to burn, as that is where the gas has sprayed.

Back in the day, I did fire reconstructions at an automotive electric shop. Fords and VWs were the bulk of the work.

As for the OP's question, I keep a run-of-the-mill ABC fire extinguisher between the front passenger seat and trans tunnel in my convertible. I've seen too many burnt cars not to have one right at hand (literally). No time lost digging for the trunk key, and readily available to me or anyone else who needs one and can see it right there in plain sight.

I carry one in my Dakota. it's about 10 years old now though.

it's under the driver seat secured to the floor. even if I'm buckled into the truck, I can throw the door open, jump out, pop the seat, and have the extinguisher in my hands ready to go in about 3 seconds.

Longer if I'm moving when the fire breaks out

I have one, mounted between the seats. It's silver and made for automotive fires, whatever that means. I've used it once to put out a carb backfire fire.. luckily either it went out instantly or it would have gone out on its own the moment I sprayed it, but it did not leave much of mess at all.

I would always recommend carrying one though I still haven't figured out exactly where to put it; I think having it loose in the interior is dangerous and I don't want to mount it in the interior for asthetic reasons...thinking of a removeable mount in the trunk, maybe attached to the spare or something...

This is precisely my dilemma...

I use to carry a 5lb CO2 it was strapped to the front edge of my seat with velcro, easy to grab as your exiting the vehicle.. A couple years ago I had my daily driver burn pretty severely, a large shop style 10 lb Halon did not put it out.... I was told by the firemen that it's not uncommon for Halon to fail on a fire out in the open, it's very effective in an enclosed area but with a moderate breeze outside it dissipates quickly & as long as a part of the fire still receives oxygen it will continue to burn & reflash the areas that you put out.... They say the chemical powder is better in spite of the mess it makes...

Pretty in depth discussion in this link...

I think this issue, fire extinguishers , is so dumb and hypocritical. I drove, and still do, old cars from the 50'/60's and the possibility of the car burning up is like winning a lottery. I ask all that have one in their car: do you also have one in your kitchen ? what's more important..home/family or a car?

There was a car show, not a high dollar or car drawer that demanded an extinguisher in the cars entered. It was at a firehall.

Yep, one in the kitchen and one in the garage too. I'm thinking you are underestimating the odds of an engine compartment fire; I've had two vehicles catch fire under the hood over the years (1992 F150 and '68 GTO) and I've seen dozens of them on the highways here...alas, still haven't won the lottery!

understood...and I live in a busy metro area...travel throughout the northeast and have seen one fire...newer car...and yet to see a clasic burn...not that it can't happen but think about this, the cars didn't spontaneously ignite in the 50/60's and most are restored with new parts. To me it's like having two spare tires

I agree its rare but it can happen. I saw my buddies 59 Herse burning as he had no fire ext either. It is rare but its nice to have one if you happen to have that rare fire. Ron

You live a fairly sheltered life if you have only seen one car fire.

Cars caught fire back then, and cars catch fire today.

Not everyone's car is in pristine condition, and not every car in apparently pristine condition has been assembled flawlessly.

Re: Fire extinguishers in your car? - 01/27/13 02:16 AM

I don't have one in my daily driver. I probably should. I do have one in my dually and in my Dart. The one in my dually I mounted to the seat mount on the driver's side so that as soon as I open the door I can reach down and release it and go. The one in the Dart is between the seats. Make sure they are very secure just in case you are in an accident. A 5 lb. extenguisher can do alot of damage rolling and flying around inside your vehicle.

Re: Fire extinguishers in your car? - 01/27/13 04:18 AM

Hey, we're talking about a car I put together with a lot of effort and money. I have been known to make a mistake or be the victim of bad luck once in awhile.

Sure, the odds of a car fire are small, but I'll feel better if I at least try to be prepared.

By the way, I have 2 extinguishers in my kitchen, and 3 mounted in each of my garages.

Now, if I could just figure out what to mount where in my Belvedere....

If you get a nice looking extinguisher I personally don't think it takes away from the interior look. Makes it look a bit racy if you ask me, especially if it's behind an aftermarket shifter.

I attached mine to the jack, and luckily I've had to use it the same amount of times I've used the jack.

I also have a trunk release in the console.

Really?....

And yes I have extinguishers in my Kitchen, garage, as well as daily drivers...and while I've never had to use them in my home/garage, daily driver or toys,...I have used them many times for other people's cars burning on the side of the road, I've seen too many classic cars go up in flames on the side of the road, who's owners couldn't do nothing but watch it burn down to nothing...roll the dice if you want to, but when "snake eye's" comes up and bite you on the back someday, you'll be singing another tune

I've got mine mounted to my tool box in the trunk. The box is strapped to the jack. Better to have it and never need it than need it and not have it.

My old work truck had a dry chem, class A foam water extinguisher, 500 gallon water tank, a foam eductor... a bunch of hose and we always put out other peoples fires. On the other hand, a dozen extinguishers were used on this one until the radiator burst pouring out enough water to put the fire out:

Re: Fire extinguishers in your car? - 01/28/13 12:46 PM

I was very lucky when my Aspen caught fire back in about 1998. It happened right as I pulled into my parking spot at the apartment building I lived in at the time, and I knew there was an extinguisher in the building right by the front door. I was able to get it and get the fire out before any real damage occurred. I've had an extinguisher in every car since then.

I never really liked the center console in my Cuda, so when I was looking for a spot to mount the extinguisher, I figured the extinguisher would look much better between the seats than the console did, so that's where it got mounted. I was right, too - I like the looks of the extinguisher much better than the old console.
