Dome Light Question

Dome Light Question - 01/14/13 02:31 PM

I have a 1970 Satellite, that, when I purchased the car the bulb that was in the dome light had, on the base of the bulb, "12v 4CP" and it was a single pole bulb. It was out. I purchased the exact replacement and when I put it in, it lit right up. Problem is, it doesn't go out when you close the door, nor when you roll the dome light switch on the dash to the point at which it is not on all the time. I got the old bulb out and from the base it looks like there should have been a two pole light in there. Not sure. Can anyone tell me the correct light bulb number for the dome light? And, if for some reason I have the correct bulb, thoughts on why it is staying on all the time. Many thanks! Chris.

I would check the two door jamb switches to make sure they aren't broken. They will ground the dome light circuit when the door is opened (switch plunger relaxed). You should be able to screw them out and see how they work.

If they are defective, very cheap to replace.

The early ones used a dual contact single element bulb.If you install a single contact they will light up.Look in the socket and see if it has 2 contacts in it.Rocky

Excellent. Thanks guys. Yes, Rocky, the socket does have two contacts versus the one that was on the bulb that was in there. I was thinking it was probably the wrong bulb that was in there. You guys, as always, are a wealth of knowledge! Many thanks. Chris.

I had one at work once that drove me nuts for a while. Then I got the idea to ask the customer if he had changed the bulb.Guess what his reply was?I had it fixed in a few minutes after he said yes.Never bothered to tell us before.Just that the light was always on all of a sudden.Almost as bad as people that put single contact bulbs in the 1157 sockets and or install the bulb backwards.Rocky
