Potential converter issue on 92 Dakota!

Potential converter issue on 92 Dakota! - 12/17/12 05:34 PM

Guys, I am having a trans built for my Dakota, a 92 with the 5.2 and A518.

I was thinking it might be a good plan to change the flexplate, then found out that with the crank sensor I cant easily do that with my MP flexplate I have.

The biggest question I have now is, will the MP stall converter fit the stock Dakota flexplate?

IIRC the mopar converters use the small pattern for the converter mounting. This works for some stock applications, but in the past on my last two 440 projects it wasn't so.

The 440's both had a larger bolt pattern on the stock converters.

The converter I plan to use is no longer in production, and cannot get exact bolt pattern specs, and since its not here to inspect I would just be drawing at straws to guess.

So if anyone has any pointers on where to find the stock converter bolt circle diameter that would be very helpful.

Also what converter to flex plate bolts will I use?

It seems that there are two different size if memory serves me. There was a 5/16 and a 7/16 or am I having an early senior moment?

And lastly, as long as the trans is out, should I install a new crank sensor? I have no idea the age of the existing one, and don't know how long they typically last. The truck has 131K on the clock, and wasn't maintained the best in the last 6-7yrs.

Without the converter in hand we are guessing just like you. It's hard to give advice with very few facts.

Im just trying to find specs on the stock converter bolt pattern.

And if anyone has used the MP 166K converter they may know the bolt size and pattern.

I will have the converter in hand Saturday. But would still like to find out the stock converter info.

All wide gear 727/518 converter share the same bolt pattern up till 1996, when they were still the small pattern but went to a 90 degree spacing as opposed to the old offset spacing. The 440 converters you must have used would have been narrow ring gear 12 inch types with the larger pattern. The Mopar performance converters will have the small bolt pattern just like your 1992 518 and use a 5/16 bolt
