275/60/15s DO fit a 66'! - 11/26/12 05:07 AM

My convertable, 66' was severely traction limited with the 235/70/15s that I had installed on the car, (640 ft.lb. torque HEMI.) The car weighs 4K, has a 3.54 gear in the Dana and acted like it was on ice with any throttle applied. I was told that a 275/60/15 wouldn't fit. In frustration, I borrowed a friends 275/60/15 M&H drag radials on 7"x15" Mopar "steelys" just to see for myself. They fit! and they hook! The temp was maybie 50 degrees, I didn't do a burnout to heat the tires but after a 10 mile cruise, I stopped and applied 1/2-3/4 throttle. The car EXPLODED! The sunvisor came loose and nearly decapited me! About 20' out, the tires let loose for mabie 10' and then hooked up for good. What a ride! I have had some fast cars, (still have a 11 second ride) but I have NEVER had a car leave so hard! For all of you who wonder, a 275/60/15 WILL fit a 66' B body, and it is well worth it!

I told you they would. I have the exact same tire/wheel on the back of my 67. Car looks great.

Best wear a helmet, or at least a weed eater face shield while driving ;-)

Looks Great!

When you go to buy your own tires, be aware that (although I've never measured them myself) Mickey Thompson ET Street Radials of the same size (275/60-15's) are listed as being half an inch wider, and having 3/4" more tread width than the M&H Racemaster.

Looks good, what springs do you have?

Yes you did and that is what made me borrow my friends to see for myself. Thanks for the help!

I am running Calvert Racing springs. I had them add 2" of arch. For some reason, my convertable refused to come up to level even with SS springs! That was one reason I called Calvert. They were very helpful, very fast delivery for a custom arch and I ended up with their whole system. I highly recommend them.

Your car looks great and judging by the times you list, is impressivly fast. I am actually looking at Nitto 555 as I can buy them with redlines to match the front from Diamond back. Can you or anyone on here, tell me if the Nitto tires hook?

Part of the reason they fit well is the 7 inch wide rims btw

Very true. But so far with many miles I have had no ill wear or handling issues. 28-30 psi. and they wear pretty even. 17-18 psi. at the track. Also the same size BFG radial T/A's with no abnormal wear.

I gotta remember this for future reference. Right now my 66 looks like a dog squatting to pee with the M.P. Heavy Duty Springs. Your car looks great by the way!

I had trouble with cop rims and 15" Magnum. Tires would always rub on the outer wheelwell f. Look for a scuff on tire and in wheel well if you have experience body roll. I flanged my wheel lips too on the 67 GTX.

Re: 275/60/15s DO fit a 66'! - 11/28/12 12:00 AM

A 15x7 steel wheel is the ticket for 275-60-15. You need that 4 1/4" backspace to get these tires on. (MT ET Street Radials)

Also what I did to make sure it didn't rub on the outside sidewall was to use a small bottle jack and a 2x4 to flatten that hump up in the wheel well where it protrudes toward the tire. Go slow and feel the quarter panel on the outside as you go to make sure you don't distort the outer panel. I gained almost an inch of clearance, tire never rubs there now.

I have 255/60 X 15" drag radials on my 66 Hemi Coronet on 7" wide steel wheels with stock back spacing. The car has stock Hemi suspension and absolutely no wheel well mods or spring relocation. The engine is built to NHRA stock specs and will run low 11s-high 10s and launchs hard and straight and hooks hard. They are MUCH easier to change and I can load the car with passengers front and rear with no rubbing even on hard corners.

Gorgeous Coronet's, both of you guys!!!

I also run 255/60-15 MT ET Street Radials on 15x7's at the track. Pic in sig is with the street tires 245/60's on the same size rims (too small, wish I'd gone bigger). My car dead-hooks with the 255 Mickeys @ 18 lbs and 60's @ 1.65. I like the look of the 275's for sure, but how is it getting them on & off? I change tires for days at the track, and even the 255's offer a little bit of a challenge getting them around the studs and into the wheelwell. Another thing to consider is that if it dead-hooks with a 27" tire, then anything bigger than that and your just giving away effective gearing. But I would agree on the other side, that the "badass look" factor is much higher with the 275's!

Re: 275/60/15s DO fit a 66'! - 11/28/12 12:17 PM

I think there are several factors to "fitting" the 275s. First, I think that the extra 2" of arch in the Calvert springs helps. Second, when the car was in the metal stage, during the build, I put the wheelwell trim on and then marked the overhang (extra) and trimmed it back to fit the trim. This gained approx 3/16". The Dana has long studs which makes the install harder. I have to tilt the wheel in at the bottom, then bring the top in. At that point, it goes right on the studs. I have Firm Feel sway bars on the car that eliminate body roll, that keeps the tires from rubbing in a hard corner. (I highly recommend Firm Feel by the way). Thanks for the compliment on the car by the way.

275/60/15s with 15x8 cop wheels 4.5 BS on my 67 Wagon.
I had to shave the trim screws and some of the excess body seam on the left more then right, but fit like a charm.
