Help with 86 Ramcharger Stalling

Help with 86 Ramcharger Stalling - 11/18/12 09:38 PM

Just bought it last week for winter. Runs great in park or neutral or going down the road but bogs and dies when put in gear. Carb was just rebuilt, new cap and rotor, regulator, plugs and wires checked everything for a vacuum leak. Nothing made a difference. It has a Spark Control Computer mounted behind the battery but no no Ignition Control Unit or ballast resister. The original air cleaner is gone. Was there a lean burn on 86 Ramchargers that someone might have tried to get rid of? I was thinking about just putting a Mopar electronic conversion kit on it. If I did that is the SCC just unplugged?

I presume 318 with the fender ESC. Call me ignorant, but I'm pretty sure even the electronic spark control (ESC) engines had a ballast and a ECM. Its got 2 pigtails coming out of the distributor, right?

There is a specific way to bypass the ESC computer and detailed in the MP instructions that come with the kit. However, its cheaper to source the parts from a JY rather than buying the kit.

The carb on that should be a 2280/6280. Consider the idle solenoid for inspection/broken wires as well as choke function.

I've been all over the truck and there isn't a ballast or ECM to be found. It should be under the brake booster but there's nothing there. Choke is working as it should. I can't access the link. Says I don't have permission. I took a few pictures.

I must be ignorant, b/c that looks OEM stock. To see the pics in the link, you have to be a member. That site has many dodge trucks pros, post in vehicle help and we'll fix ya up.

The idle solenoid was on on the carb but the wire was cut. I thought that only kicked in when the air conditioner put the engine under load. Can new ones still be bought over the counter? I tried searching for a new one but nothing came up.

I checked the distributor and there are no wires coming off of it.

I had a 86 Ram/C.Nice truck. It did not have anything on the air cleaner, just the control unit by the battery.Only thing I did to mine was get a carb for a 1969 318.That made a difference.

I wasn't sure if it should have had the lean burn but I figured being an 86 it should have an ECU and Ballast resistor but it doesn't. No vacuum advance on the distributor either.

No vac advance or ECU.It's all in the controller by the battery.
