it doesn't matter.

I am assuming that you are talking about Tie Rod ends.
If that's the case, then 2 of them will be right hand thread, and two of them will be left hand thread.
I'm pretty sure the right hand thread ones, are the outers, but in actual functionality, it won't make any difference if they are installed opposite.
Might screw up the wheel alignment guy in the beginning though, if he's familiar in which way he has to turn them.

As said if you have a rightie and a leftie on each side you're good. I like to put the lefties on the left sides on each side as I sit in the drivers seat. Eyeball the threads & left hand threads have an unmistakeable angled twist to the threads that cannot be mistaken whereas right hand threads appear to be straight. I thread them into the sleeve so I have as much engagment as possible with enough left so the adjuster can be turned a fair amount either way and I have the wheels straight ahead then a hair inward then thread the tie rods into the adjuster as described till the length is exactly what is needed to just slip into the tapered holes on each end

I agree with all that's been posted so far.

One more thing...
IF the hole for the zerk differs, the ones with the holes down [opposite the tapered stud] are meant to be the outers, and the ones with the holes opposite the threaded shaft that goes into the sleeve are meant to be inners.

My kids Little Express truck had one side reversed from the factory.I ordered a new outer and was going nuts till I figured out the outer on the truck was the inner from the factory. The DS was correct. They were never changed or removed. Finally just got all new and installed them as they should have been.Rocky

OK, so how do you tell an outer from an inner if 2 of each are laying on a workbench? Are they physically the same except for the threads? I ask because I am going to be rebuilding the front end on my E body. I have been pricing pieces and will be getting most of the stuff from Rock Auto. They advertise all of their inner tie rods as having left hand threads and right hand for the outers. Is that all that there is to it? Rapid Robert you say that you like the lefties on the left on both sides. I've been looking through the FSM but haven't seen anything yet.

Thanks

The easy way...that I didnt do...keep them in the box...where the part # is... and then mark them..

Thanks

Well heck ya.

Another question having to do with front end rebuild. Where do you find the clips that hold the Torsion bars in? From Ma or the aftermarket and what kind of pliers take them out?

Just getting my ducks in a row before starting a thread of my own.

Thanks

Re: Tie Rod ends.... little help.? - 11/02/12 01:44 AM

yes they're the same except for the threads, now different brands may have a slightly different body but that is of no consequence in how it installs/functions. As you know each sleeve is right hand threaded on one end and left hand threaded on the other so each side will have a rightie and a leftie & you can flip the sleeve either way and there wont be any problem. yes there's an order in which they were installed at coming down the assembly line for standardization & speed of repetion but you can go either way & it will not cause you or the alignment guy any problems as if he needs to lengthen it & he loosens the mini clamps and gives it a couple of turns & it shortens then he just quickly goes back the other way & even if he is aware of how they were factory installed it could have been rebuilt on down the line & could have been done both ways & he's seen tons of em both ways. I put the lefties on the left side of each side simply so if one gets loose & I want to change it I dont have to get close enough to it to eyeball the threads I can just pick one up, that & more importantly it's just a personal habit of mine which stems from me wanting things in the same order all the time (as much as I can)

Robert, I figured there was a method to the madness.

Any input on the Torsion bar clips and how to get them out?

Thanks

There usually is even if it ain't logical . Not sure if they are being reproduced (they might be) & easiest would be to buy a used one or two from someone on here who has a couple handy. Usually you can squeeze the ends together slightly with some vice grips set to a certain distance rather than squeezing the ends all the way together with a regular pair of pliers then pull it out (I like to maintain the original shape). In a tough case where it is pinched in you might need to unload the front end by jacking it up then driving the T bar forward a hair by driving it with a brass drift/BFH then taking out the clips

They are. I got two pair (of T-bar retainer clips, that is) from the dealer last year. Found my other one that I "lost". So I now I have three new ones sitting on the bench...
